Howitzers Indigenous Rights

Across the country referred to as Canada, Indigenous Peoples are disproportionately homeless. Dispossessed from traditional territories, belonging to reserves starved of federal funding, traumatized by the impacts of Indian residential schools, and deprived of our cultural ways of life - often, Indigenous Peoples have no choice but to make their way to urban areas and the settler city. Upon arrival in the city, Indigenous Peoples are met with racial discrimination on the streets, in the classroom, on the job, in healthcare settings and when seeking housing. It is under these circumstances that many Indigenous Peoples find themselves on the fringes of society, disconnected from territory, culture and family.

This audio journey explores settler cities as sites and mechanisms of settler colonialism. By examining attempts by the City of Prince George and the City of Edmonton to remove homeless encampments from their cityscapes, the research demonstrates the parallels in homelessness management strategies (i.e., leveraging of bylaws and zoning) used by settler cities to deny Indigenous Peoples of their inherent rights to the land. 
 
Homeless encampments offer self-determined solutions for Indigenous Peoples to assert their right to belong in the settler city. Settler cities respond to these encampments by removing them from the cityscape through the leveraging of urban Planning policies and tools. In attempts to remove homeless encampments, settler cities perpetuate the dispossession of Indigenous territories and the invisibilization of Indigenous Peoples in Canadian society. An autobiographical narrative to represent my voice as an Indigenous person has been woven throughout the research and as such, this work also supports decolonizing academy processes and the discipline of Planning in Canada.

The Land Tells Us We Belong - Undergraduate Thesis Knowledge Sharing April 2023

Today on American Indian Airwaves, a renewed effort towards seeking freedom for international, political Indigenous prisoner Leonard Peltier, who since 1977 wrongfully continues serving two consecutive life sentences in a federal penitentiary despite ongoing severe health issues, plus more here on American Indian Airwaves.  

Leonard Peltier is from the Anishnaabe and Lakota Nations and was unjustly convicted in 1977 for aiding and abetting in the deaths of two FBI agents in a June 26, 1975. The shootout happened on the Pine Ridge reservation in Oglala County, SD and was between the FBI and members of the American Indian Movement who were defending the Oglala community at their request. Three American Indian Movement activist were charged at the time including Leonard Peltier, yet the two other co-defendants, Robert Robideau and Darrelle “Dino” Butler were acquitted by reason of self-defense. 

Peltier was later extradited from Canada under questionable circumstances was tried separately and his trial was replete with prosecutorial misconduct, falsified testimony, fabricated evidence, and even the autopsy presented to the jury was done by an examiner who had never seen the bodies of the two agents, plus more.

AMC Grand Chief Cathy Merrick on Leadership

Thirty years ago, the Hiawatha/Highway 55 re-route and a MnDOT light rail project made a big impact on Minneapolis residents. But the impact was not always positive. The construction project threatened Coldwater Spring, the 11,000-year-old spring that furnished water to Fort Snelling for a century and was the birthplace of Minnesota. Coldwater Spring is on federal land and is contiguous with Minnehaha Park. The Mendota Mdewakanton Dakota community and the Park and River Alliance went to court against MnDOT, the City of Minneapolis, and the Park Board to cease the destruction of Coldwater Spring. 

Today, Coldwater is still flowing thanks to hundreds of young protestors who were joined by Mendota Dakota descendants of the people who lived along the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi rivers when Europeans arrived.

Advocate and water protector SuSu Jeffrey opposed the re-route project. 

Susu has written multiple articles on the history of the spring and the surrounding landscape. She has been leading full moon walks at Coldwater every month since the year 2000. Everyone is welcome to join in the group howl.
