2023 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Occupation of Wounded Knee which is the outcome of over 200 members of the American Indian Movement and supporters occupying Wounded Knee, Lakota Nation (South Dakota) for 71 days from February 27th, 1973, to May 8th, 1973. The Occupation of Wounded Knee was in response to a call to action for help from traditional Lakota residents whose civil, human, and Treaty of Fort Laramie rights were constantly being violated by corrupt Native American and United States government officials. The Wounded Knee Occupation resulted in a 71-day military standoff with U.S. government officials – the largest military attack in United States history, and quickly drew domestic and international support from people, organizations, and foreign governments throughout the world.

Today’s guest grew up and lives in the Yurok Nation (Northern California). He is a longtime activist,  fisherperson, plus more and he joins us for the entire hour to share his lived experiences in the Yurok Nation during the reign of terror in the 1960s and 1970s and how he arrived at and participated in the Occupation of Wounded Knee in 1973. Join us for in-depth, personal and enriching story on the parallels between the  militarization of settler colonial state violence and oppression during the “Fishing Wars” in the Yurok Nation to at Wound Knee Occupation of 1973, plus more.

A Yurok Perspective on the 50th Anniversary of the Occupation of Wounded Knee: Part 3

Haaland v. Brackeen is a lesser-known case in the docket for the Supreme Court, but it could overturn the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA). This would create massive implications for the laws that govern Indigenous sovereignty in the United States. We talk with author and activist Rebecca Nagle about the case of "Baby O" and the Librettis and how their story led to this case. We also investigate the money and interests behind the lawsuit. There's a lot at stake, maybe even the very nature of tribal laws, which were enshrined in the Constitution. The overturning of the ICWA is not just another custody battle.

The Fight Over the Indian Child Welfare Act Is Not Just a Custody Battle

Across the country referred to as Canada, Indigenous Peoples are disproportionately homeless. Dispossessed from traditional territories, belonging to reserves starved of federal funding, traumatized by the impacts of Indian residential schools, and deprived of our cultural ways of life - often, Indigenous Peoples have no choice but to make their way to urban areas and the settler city. Upon arrival in the city, Indigenous Peoples are met with racial discrimination on the streets, in the classroom, on the job, in healthcare settings and when seeking housing. It is under these circumstances that many Indigenous Peoples find themselves on the fringes of society, disconnected from territory, culture and family.

This audio journey explores settler cities as sites and mechanisms of settler colonialism. By examining attempts by the City of Prince George and the City of Edmonton to remove homeless encampments from their cityscapes, the research demonstrates the parallels in homelessness management strategies (i.e., leveraging of bylaws and zoning) used by settler cities to deny Indigenous Peoples of their inherent rights to the land. 
 
Homeless encampments offer self-determined solutions for Indigenous Peoples to assert their right to belong in the settler city. Settler cities respond to these encampments by removing them from the cityscape through the leveraging of urban Planning policies and tools. In attempts to remove homeless encampments, settler cities perpetuate the dispossession of Indigenous territories and the invisibilization of Indigenous Peoples in Canadian society. An autobiographical narrative to represent my voice as an Indigenous person has been woven throughout the research and as such, this work also supports decolonizing academy processes and the discipline of Planning in Canada.

Today on American Indian Airwaves, a renewed effort towards seeking freedom for international, political Indigenous prisoner Leonard Peltier, who since 1977 wrongfully continues serving two consecutive life sentences in a federal penitentiary despite ongoing severe health issues, plus more here on American Indian Airwaves.  

Leonard Peltier is from the Anishnaabe and Lakota Nations and was unjustly convicted in 1977 for aiding and abetting in the deaths of two FBI agents in a June 26, 1975. The shootout happened on the Pine Ridge reservation in Oglala County, SD and was between the FBI and members of the American Indian Movement who were defending the Oglala community at their request. Three American Indian Movement activist were charged at the time including Leonard Peltier, yet the two other co-defendants, Robert Robideau and Darrelle “Dino” Butler were acquitted by reason of self-defense. 

Peltier was later extradited from Canada under questionable circumstances was tried separately and his trial was replete with prosecutorial misconduct, falsified testimony, fabricated evidence, and even the autopsy presented to the jury was done by an examiner who had never seen the bodies of the two agents, plus more.

AMC Grand Chief Cathy Merrick on Leadership

Twenty years ago, the Hiawatha/Highway 55 re-route and MnDOT light rail project made a big impact on Minneapolis residents. But the impact was not always positive. The construction project threatened the last natural water table in Hennepin County, Coldwater Spring, which is located on federal land contiguous to Minnehaha Park. The Mendota Mdewakanton Dakota community and the Park and River Alliance went to court against MnDOT, the City of Minneapolis, and the Park Board to cease the destruction of Minnehaha Park. 

Advocate and water protector Susu Jeffrey opposed the re-route project. Susu and other advocates felt they needed to take extreme actions to try to protect Minnehaha Park and Coldwater Spring. After a contentious, expensive fight, the project was halted.

Concessions were made. The park and historic spring were saved, but many trees were lost. In the end, the road and light rail were constructed. 

SuSu has written multiple articles on the history of the spring and the surrounding landscape. She has been leading full moon walks at Coldwater every month since the year 2000. Everyone is welcome to join in the group howl.
