This episode delves into the limitations of language when exploring intangible concepts like spirituality. We challenge the common Western assumption that spirituality is merely mysticism or Eastern philosophy, highlighting its direct, experiential nature. We discuss why a 'universal basic explanation' is elusive, drawing parallels to describing color to the blind or music to the deaf. We explore the core of spirituality, not as a concept to be dissected, but as a state to be lived. Just as swimming cannot be learned from a lecture, spirituality requires immersion and personal experience. We examine how self-realized truths, born from lived experience, transcend intellectual understanding. We discuss why holy texts require spiritual interpretation, and why seeking 'light' is a personal journey. We underscore the importance of turning inward, of experiencing the 'light' for oneself, and how this direct encounter unveils the true nature of spirituality, a language spoken by the heart, not the tongue.

“Once I Was Fame Seeker” is a folk-blues reflection on the ancient path of transformation and purpose. Inspired by Chapter 1 of the Lotus Sūtra, this song gives voice to the past life of Maitreya Bodhisattva—when he was known as Yaśaskāma, the Fame Seeker. Blending timeless Buddhist wisdom with modern soul, the song explores how our desire for recognition can evolve into a vow to serve, uplift, and illuminate others. It’s a tribute to every artist, seeker, and bodhisattva walking the middle way between longing and letting go. Written and performed by The William Altig Choir.
