PART I

When I wrote Ritmo, I reflected on many aspects of my life, but essentially on my ongoing difficulty in controlling my anxiety, which slowly transformed into depression. I also thought about the time I was attending therapy to gain better tools to manage it, and where I learned that routine is an essential element in handling anxiety and depression; however, I didn’t want to extinguish the adventurous flame within me.

During this process, I wanted to define what these feelings of anxiety and depression meant to me, and understand that I cannot deny them, but by accepting them, I could only then control them—it is part of my nature as a human.

In my present, I wanted to express that even after suffering the self-destructive calamities of anxiety and depression, it was okay if I consciously built what I manifested, and I began an internal journey, a discovery through these new routines I had created to rebuild myself.

During my reconstruction, I strengthened my relationship with music; at the same time that I created songs, I felt a great catharsis in channeling these feelings of sadness into music—something tangible through the senses—understanding the importance of some of these emotions that we sometimes label as negative, and their ability to create beautiful things when the perspective from which we see them has changed.

PART II

And I realized that many times asking questions is useless; in life, action is what controls life, and there can be no perfection in movement.
I wanted to add irony in having been born flawed, because we are only imperfect—but within imperfection lies the beauty of existing. We are all unique because of our imperfections; no one is better than anyone, yet we all are.

After dealing so much with negative feelings, mainly toward myself, I realized that the secret to respecting others comes from myself, and with them being my mirror, as at the beginning of the song, I close the circle of seeing myself in you and deciding that the best way to treat you, as I wish to be treated, is with love.

Music has created inexplicable, almost supernatural experiences within me.
But at the same time, I have always tried to delve into my consciousness, and it is during difficult times that I ask myself about life and existence.
We are an ecosystem in a sea of life; this new reality, without the distortion of uncontrolled emotions, pushes me to ask myself more existential questions.

What is my plan? Is my life determined by time I cannot see or control? Is it necessary that, in order to make my way, I must always “sin” in some way?

Dudley Anderson was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa. After graduating from Bible College in 1990, God opened the way for Dudley to branch out into Christian radio. As a musician and worship leader he developed a heart for Christian music, which became the main thrust of his radio work in South Africa.
