The apes have escaped!

Ape Escape is a retro PlayStation game that still holds up if you can survive the awkward controls. If you're into early 2000s gaming or enjoy a solid PlayStation drum and bass soundtrack you should give it a shot. 

The gist of the game is pretty simple: a bunch of monkeys get super smart thanks to some mind-control helmets and they start messing with time. You play as a kid named Spike who has to use his arsenal of sci fi gadgets to catch them.

It was the first game where you needed to use both analogue sticks on the PS1 controller I think. It's crazy to think about now as we all take that for granted. One stick moves you around, and the other swings the net you use to catch monkeys. It was crazy fun playing this back then with friends.

It aged pretty well in my opinion, chunky graphics, weird sci-fi, bright colours, and an absolutely wild soundtrack for its time that sounds like some sorta crazy house jungle hybrid that just went off the rails.

It's one of those games that just looks and feels like it came from an era where the rules were a little looser and game design was a little more unhinged, in a good way. 

The game and it's soundtrack are something special and I made this as a small homage to that game.

This track is inspired by Ecco the Dolphin. It's not the first track I've written inspired by this game, "how high in the sky can you fly?" is a track I wrote for my Darkly Dreaming EP which is a direct quote from the game. 

The game is a surreal experience. It debuted on the Sega Genesis in 1992 if I recall correctly. On the surface, it's a cute game about a dolphin exploring the ocean but underneath, it's something much stranger and more haunting.

You play as Ecco, a bottlenose dolphin who is suddenly separated from his pod by a mysterious weather event. As you search for your missing family, the game slowly unfolds into a darker sci-fi narrative invoking time travel and cruel and mysterious alien invaders. What begins as a serene underwater adventure turns into an eerie and sometimes unsettling odyssey through the deep sea and beyond.

Have you ever stood on a balcony, or by a cliff's edge, looked over the edge and unexpectedly thought, "If I wanted to, I could just jump?" 

The feeling is known as the "call of the void" or "l'appel du vide" in French. It's more common than you might think and isn't always associated with suicidal ideation. In fact, in some cases it may be a defensive mechanism designed to spur you into action to ensure your safety by imagining the worst.

An  original junglist from Los Angeles, now residing in Southern California, I. Wright rinses jungle, drum and bass and has been rocking crowds in California and beyond for the past two decades.  He's built up a reputation for moving the masses with wall-shaking performances, mixing crisply patterned percussion and ubiquitous bass.  

In 1997, I. Wright’s love for jungle music had evolved into dj'ing; he began creating his own signature jump-up and ragga sound by mixing and recording jungle and drum and bass vinyl from the Metalheadz, Ram, No-U Turn, Da’ Lick, Joker, Urban Takeover, Switch, Fresh Kuttz, Zion, Kemet and Congo Natty record labels.
  
By the Spring of ’98, I. Wright was already pushing his sound in the SoCal EDM scene with his performances and via mix tapes such as “The Human Experiment,” "Subversive Cursive," and “My Habitat”.  When asked about the origins of his d.j. name, I. Wright shares, “DJ'ing is writing for me, every dj has a unique, creative style- their poetic voice; it's a musical signature behind the turntables.  For me, each mix is a new musical poem or story I write.”  That same year he created “Plastic Addicts,” a production company, and d.j. collective, which was originally conceived by I. Wright in his “Plastic Addicts” radio show on KJUC, one of Santa Barbara’s only independent, non-commercial radio stations. This was the beginning of I. Wright’s career in radio broadcasting.  I. Wright would later follow up with his own internet radio show, “Junglist Unity” from 2003-2008, first on  movementradio.com and then on dnbradio.com. By 2001, I. Wright was inspired to throw “Strictly DnB”: the only all-drum and bass monthly club night in Santa Barbara with his friend and fellow junglist Mad Huban of the Beatnix Labs, Santa Barbara. This drum and bass night was the longest running monthly drum and bass show in Santa Barbara and the 805 area from 2001-2003. 

Over his career, I. Wright has performed with noteworthy international drum and bass producers and d.j.’s in Los Angeles and across Southern California:  R.A.W.(6-Blocc), Origin(Back2Basics),Clutch and No Face (Respect, Junglist Platoon), APX-1(Ghetto Life Rec.), Nightstalker(Bassrush Prod.), Infiltrata (John Dada) TABU (Refuge), among others.

I. Wright is constantly exploring the drum and bass horizon, blending the sub-genres of dnb sounds into his unique, bass-heavy percussive poetry. 

His most recent mix is the soulful, summertime studio mix, "Illiquid Volume 2" (2025).  Other recordings include the live rave set "I. Wright at Strictly DnB" (2017), the romantic dnb poem "My Love"(2016), the uplifting dnb composition, "Uplift"(2015), the fast-paced liquid dnb journey "Love This Way"(2015),  the jump up dance-floor freight-train "Indomitable Sound"(2015), the melodic and smooth liquid sonic-cocktail “Illiquid”(2015), and the all-vinyl audio sculpture “Optimism”(2014).

Invariably setting off crowds, I. Wright mixes the original jungle and freshest millennial drum and bass to those who know and those who don't, stateside, worldwide.  Get set to elevate and dance to the inimitable sounds of I. Wright.
