Upgrade My Soul

"The Bodhisattva's Mirror" is a contemplative and gently melancholic folk song, infused with subtle blues influences. Inspired by Buddhist philosophy, the song explores the idea that enlightenment and compassion reside within all beings, and that every encounter offers an opportunity for transformation. The lyrics paint a picture of a Bodhisattva – an enlightened being dedicated to helping others – who appears in countless forms, reflecting back our own potential for awakening.

In this discussion, Mike and I talk about his latest book, and Mike shares several anecdotes from different people that Mike interviewed. Some highlights from this conversation include:

-          the concept of “The Harmony of the Spheres” that emphasizes the interconnectedness of the cosmos and the spiritual journey of the soul; the main idea of which is that the cosmos is ordered by mathematical principles, and that planets and stars move in harmony with these principles, producing a kind of eternal music;

-         How the stories Mike shared bring up a lot of ideas related to the notion of ‘tapping into’ a larger system (that we might call consciousness, or cosmos; additionally, it seems to be suggesting a type of mind-universe alignment;

-         Joshua Cutchin’s story about creating a new narrative that combines folklore and UFO phenomena; and the connection between paranormal phenomena and death (which lines up beautifully with a book we read for our prior Patreon book club meeting -- Dr. Jeff Kripal and Whitley Strieber’s book, The Super Natural: A New Vision of the Unexplained. In the Dedication, Whitley Strieber notes that his wife Anne said, after carefully reading and organizing the numerous letters that they received, that the UFO experiences all had something to do with death, too.);

-         Sebastiano De Filippi’s section, who also discusses similar ideas to Joshua’s about music in his work as a conductor;

Are you projecting human qualities onto things that aren't human? Like talking animals?

We see a lot of anthropomorphized nature spirits in fairy tales and in children's books. So we're comfortable with the fairy where, we are comfortable with the garden gnome.

There's like a layer of what I would call positivity that we tend to put on nature spirits, which is fine. However, there's also a lot of nature spirits that aren't necessarily fairy tale material, right?

They're like the bog spirits and the stinky ones and the weird ones and all of that fungus and depth and rot and interconnectedness and darkness that exists in nature, will you have that?

Do you want to perceive the earth spirits? Because earth is deep, dark, and dank, right? The earth is full of all sorts of things. And there has to be, at some point, space for them to be what they are, not what you're comfortable with.

And that's what I would ask you to surrender is what you're comfortable with in favor of what they are.

Vemos un montón de espíritus de la naturaleza antropomorfizados en los cuentos de hadas y libros infantiles. Así que nos sentimos cómodos con las hadas y también con los nomos de jardín.

Musically, it blends fingerpicked acoustic blues with spiritual folk and gospel testimony—think delta blues meets dharma teaching, with harmonica crying over ocean waves.
