Monster Mondays #301 - The Invisible Man (2020)

These tracks were the results of trying out different musical ideas…. just leaning more on musical changes to keep the ears interested and jamming with the sounds to see what came out. Keeping things roughly around 160 bpm tempo just leaves more room to really appreciate the breaks for their character and feel, and I hope this comes across.

#68: Ellison's Invisible Man with Juno Kerelis '24, English

In 1978, long before OBIISSS reached the height of its chaotic fame, Billy Noknees took matters into his own hands—quite literally. During a home-recorded demo session, Billy decided to play every instrument himself, crafting what would later become the infamous Invisible Man. Armed with a basic tape recorder, a handful of instruments, and his own stubborn determination, Billy laid down the track in his living room. But, in true Billy fashion, even a one-man recording session didn’t go smoothly.

As the story goes, the frustrations of juggling multiple instruments and recording equipment led to an increasingly ridiculous situation: Billy ended up arguing—with himself. Between multiple retakes, wrong notes, and technical blunders, Billy’s temper flared. Legend has it that he stormed around the room, swearing at the “band” (which was, of course, just him), and even threw a drumstick at a wall, cursing out his own mistakes.

This bizarre internal conflict directly inspired Invisible Man, a track that lyrically explored the feeling of being your own worst enemy. The song was a raw, lo-fi recording, with Billy playing each instrument—drums, guitar, bass, and keys—and layering them together in an imperfect but endearing DIY fashion. The result was an oddball, almost surreal disco-rock fusion with lyrics about battling an "invisible" force, which was really just Billy fighting himself.

Invisible Man was pressed to a limited run of just 100 7" vinyl copies. But, like so many OBIISSS rarities, most of these disappeared into obscurity—until a box of 99 untouched copies surfaced during a house clearance sale in 2022. The box, covered in dust and tucked away in a forgotten attic, had somehow survived for decades, untouched and unheard.

Now, remastered with the magic of AI, Invisible Man is finally seeing the light of day. The track comes with its original sleeve—a minimalist design featuring a lone, shadowy figure, which perfectly captures the solitary, self-reflective nature of the song.

So here it is: Invisible Man, a rare glimpse into Billy’s early, home-recorded days, where a one-man band turned into a one-man argument, resulting in one of the strangest tracks of his career. Enjoy this forgotten demo from 1978, where even when Billy was alone, he still managed to start a fight!

It was a cold, wintery night when Scutch MacGee stumbled through my door. He was confused, parked in the wrong driveway, and immediately remarked on how he almost got stuck in patches of ice. We greeted each other as brothers, arms wrapped in a warm embrace. We sipped on Whiskey based on his first-born’s namesake while we conversed about horror movies and shit to get excited about this upcoming year. Inevitably, a hush filled the room when he finally spoke up on what was on his mind. His kids. His kids and their ability to be startlingly spooky. He was joking, just like I’m joking now, but you look into a man’s eyes and you just know… Somethings are the truth, and they can’t be masked by humor. They’re all too apparent. Just like how he’s a parent: to some spooky kids. Anyways, then I made him read stories with me about creepy kids. LOL
