Deemster Jack Corrin in conversation with Elizabeth Ardern-Corris in 2012, talking about his childhood and youth in Douglas during the war, with family in Foxdale and in King William's College.
He speaks about his professional training as an advocate and his rise to become First Deemster and, even, interim acting Lieutenant Governor for a period. As well as discussing his involvement in the European Court of Human Rights case concerning corporal punishment and the use of the birch in the Island, Deemster Corrin speaks about various aspects of the Deemster position, from regalia and technology through to the building of the new Courthouse in Douglas.
The final portion of the interview is devoted to his retirement years, which saw many years of important and influential work for charities in the Isle of Man.

Changing attitudes to disability in the Isle of Man

An account of the legal cases that brought about the end of birching in the Isle of Man, from the Attorney General at the time, Deemster Jack Corrin.
In this short extract from a longer oral history interview, Deemster Corrin explains how the Isle of Man fell into a course that left to the clash with the European Court of Human Rights from 1974, when the Island was in a very curious position in relation to the UK, who were vocally against the Manx position on corporal punishment.

Giving a pint of beer to a donkey

A conversation with Doris Clague about her childhood in Douglas before WW2 and her work in knitting factories around Douglas.

Born in 1927 on Castle Mona Avenue, Douglas, Doris Clague's early years were spent at Springvalley Lodge, where her father was the garnder at Springvalley House, before they moved to Broadway, from where she married in 1947.

This conversation covers such topics as: Murray's Road School, performing in the Guild, Broadway in the 1940s, Douglas entertainment and dance halls of the 1940s (including Howsdrake, Derby Castle and the Palais de Danse), deliveries, shopping, and her first time off the Isle of Man.

She also discusses her career as a machinist in knitting factories around Douglas. She started at the age of 14 in Central Knitting on Athol Street where she made pullovers for the military. She then moved to work at the glove factory in Victory House, before she worked at home when she had young children, doing work for Doughty's.
