Though the book on which “American Fiction” is based was released in 2001, it felt timeless for writer/director Cord Jefferson:

“When I finished reading it, I was just astounded. The material itself, just about the racial politics around culture and of being an artist in America—these are issues that I've been discussing with my friends and discussing with myself for 20 years now. The thing that’s very clear is that all these issues are still pertinent to today’s world, unfortunately, and there’s still a lot of relevance to this book.”

Following the screening, Deadline’s chief film critic Pete Hammond, who can also be seen on KCET’s Must See Movies, moderates a Q&A with director/writer Cord Jefferson.

In this rundown episode, Jenn and Daren catch up on important happenings from the last few weeks. In the first segment, they recap the high points of Megan Thee Stallion’s “HISS” and Nicki Minaj’s failure of a response “Big Foot.”

In the second segment, Jenn and Daren highlight the wins Black folx took home from the 2024 Grammys and Oscars, celebrating the achievements of artists such as Victoria Monet, Coco Jones, and Samara Joy. In turn they question the status of a music industry where Killa Mike wins top rap honors and Jay-Z is awarded a Dr. Dre Global Impact award. On the film side, they lament an industry still awarding Black women for playing mammies (Da’Vine Joy Randolph from “The Holdovers”), finding a home for “I Don’t Unbend My Elbows Barbie” (aka Issa Rae), and allowing Tyler Perry to continue making movies like Tyler Perry’s “Mea Culpa.”

In the third segment, they close things out on a positive note, spotlighting a recent $100M award granted to Spelman College and a donation made in the name of supporting Black college students from Lloyd & Janice Dong.

Luckily, there was no undertone of violence, but they still weren’t quite sure What They Were Pob For. Finally, after some soul searching with a touch of interdimensional hijinks, they realized that They’re Just Pob, and that’s Pobnough. At that point, the only thing left to do was to Pob The Night away while discussing the biggest, and unquestionably one of the absolute best, films of 2023. -About Daren and Jenn-

Jenn is a queer, Black feminist from Oakland. Daren is an introverted nerd and novelist from Anaheim.

They are boo’ed up and have been since 2002 when they bonded over a mutual love of Brian McKnight’s “Never Felt This Way”, their favorite Brandy lyrics, and nineties TV like Family Matters, Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and Living Single. It was a shared obsession with Black cultural icons, histories, and artistry that drew Jenn and Daren to one another even though they are actually completely different personality-wise.

Jenn and Daren have always said to themselves, “Wouldn’t it be cool if we had a show?” Well, no major networks have reached out yet. So, until that happens, you can find the them here, sharing their views on race and culture and everything in between.

They are young thirty-somethings who have been married since for over a decade. Jenn and Daren have three beautiful, brilliant, radical, snarky kids who play no games.

Ridiculously unproductive NERD movie talk that is occasionally deep and entertaining.  We call ourselves "Kinda Movie Critics" because we 'kinda' are and we're 'kinda' not, we're just a bunch of nerds that like to watch movies.
