DJ Freedom presents the 75th volume of SKATE CRATES. This is and always has been, DJ Freedom's SOUND for roller skate music. You will hear variations of it at roller rinks across the United States-particularly in New York City, New Jersey, Atlanta GA, Richmond VA (we'll get to that) and Jacksonville, FL (shout to our skate family at SK8 City). "Skate Boutique" is an EVENT that grew from the SKATE CRATES sound, get it? It took us (us = DJ Freedom and Martina, he sometimes calls her "Queen Martina") four (4) years to come up with this simple breakdown of the 2 phrases, "Skate Crates" and "Skate Boutique," which was introduced to Brooklyn skaters in the spring of 2025 when DJ Freedom renamed the events under this theme. The mix presented here is a complex, musically deep and melodic journey into the sound of roller skate music. DJ Freedom fuses all of the major styles present at "adult skate sessions," particularly based in and around R&B. It is very rhythmic, and the beat rarely stops except for dramatic twists and turns in the songs. When it does, it is purposeful. This is musical, thematic, theatrical cinema for skaters first; dancers may or may not find it as appealing. These sounds and styles have been tested in front of live audiences and they generally speaking LOVE these mixing styles presented here, but when you listen to a good number of DJs, mixing is not as important as playing "hot" songs, or songs they tell you are hot. In the Skate Crates sound, the idea of what is "hot" is played with; we are from an era where the DJ dictated what was hot based on what sounded good sonically, was musically right. That STILL holds true with MANY DJs, but only those who are more musically inclined; they tend to also be remixers and producers as well (especially in house music). There are hints at house music in this mix as well, but the tempos are kept within the "sweet spot" of 100-104bpms. It never goes faster than that here, although the ENERGY is always going forward and intensifies. Even when it slows down, there is still a lot of energy in the way the songs are presented. This mix does not allow you a break, it is meant to drive you forward to skate from start to finish. Once again, dancers, if you love to dance, you will find gems here worthy of your steps. We do not ask you to enjoy this with any preconceived thoughts of today's popular music commercially, because when you play THIS (or ANY Skate Crates mixes), you are transported to a place where great music lives, indie artists are always on display, legacy and legends breathe life into the weight of how good these mixes are and can be. For beginners, it may be overwhelming to hear music played this way, but this is DJ Freedom's vision. To all the DJs who inspire us, you will remain nameless here, but you know who you are. To the nearly 100 artists featured in this mix, thank you for your contributions to great music. You are our muse. To the skaters, most of all, you are the reason for mixes like this. We LOVE your energy, your drive to freestyle new moves-and yes, DJ Freedom and Martina do skate-and we appreciate your ongoing elevation of roller skate culture. Superstars who skate have also brought attention and credibility to roller skating, and we appreciate that as well. Finally, about that Richmond VA comment. This mix was produced LIVE at a nightclub called "Richmond Live." That is why the importance of THIS first mix, produced there in the lower level (basement) by DJ Freedom was so important to present. IT is a glimpse in what you can expect in the coming months from him, along with carefully selected DJs and live performers.
