February 2026 marks 20 years since we lost James Yancey – better known as Jay Dee or J Dilla – and since his music remains as vital as ever and still resonates deeply with me, I've decided to dig up this 2006 Mix from the archives for the second episode of "Q Radio".
My introduction to his work came through a 1996 Vibe feature on The Ummah, which sent me straight to a record shop called Matchbox to pick up the second Pharcyde album. The moment "Bullshit" came on – that vibraphone loop, those deep sub-like kicks, the cracking snares – I was completely floored. One of those rare moments where music stops you in your tracks. Jay Dee became one of my favourite producers that day and has never left that spot since. We even share the same birthday (February 7th) which always felt like a quiet little coincidence worth smiling about.
I did get to meet James once – at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2004, while he was performing with Madlib and other members of the Stones Throw family. My DJ crew at the time, Digital Love Squad (Mr. Beatnick, Breakplus, Keena and I), was playing between the acts, and I found myself backstage just long enough to tell him he was my favourite producer. He thanked me and gave me one of his wide, generous smiles before Ty – RIP Ty! – pulled him away for a conversation of his own. Brief as it was, I've never forgotten it.
Then came February 10th, 2006. I had just played a live gig with Grand Pianoramax at one of the closing parties of the legendary Dachkantine club in Zürich – still buzzing from the night – when my phone lit up with an SMS from Breakplus: "rest in peace J Dilla." I stood there in shock, then immediately turned around and showed it to everyone around me – Alex Dallas, Ron & Tobi from Soultourist – friends who understood exactly what that message meant. The night went quiet in a different way after that...
This blend was recorded a few months later, in the summer of 2006. There was a J Dilla tribute event at the Montreux Jazz Festival, and I put this together for the car ride down with a few friends – a way to share some of my favourite Jay Dee productions before we got there. Aside from testing a few blends beforehand, it was done in one take. Even with such a vast and impressive discography to draw from, selecting my favourites didn't feel that hard. The music just spoke for itself.
20 years on, Dilla's influence remains everywhere. and this mix is my small way of saying thank you Jay Dee!
