Friday's Fresh Track - August 9, 2024 (Alex Pangman)

This track was inspired by a period in my life when I had to deal with the emotional roller-coaster ride brought on by a narcissistic "friend".  I learned a lot during the experience, not all of it easy to deal with.  I am sure many of my listeners will be able to identify with the emotions I experienced during that time in my life.

The words are shown below, for those listeners who might be interested.

The track was written on guitar using chords with a blues/jazz base, especially the jarring E7+9 chord that dominates the verses, and was expanded out using Avid Sibelius for the scoring of the music.

Production was done using Avid ProTools.

David has lived in South Australia all his life, with occasional travel interstate and overseas. He began studying music at 10 years of age, and was initially classically trained through the AMEB schools program in South Australia.  His interest in modern forms of music began when he began his university education.

Since the age of about 20, David worked as a semi-professional musician (keyboards) while he studied at the University of Adelaide and then worked as a professional engineer for a large Australian consulting firm. In the Adelaide band scene, he played most styles of modern music in bands of up to seven members.

In recent times he has focused on the composition of original music for a three-piece band called Crunchtime Music, a recording group based in Adelaide.

Away from the band scene, he has been composing classical and jazz/rock/blues works using a combination of his Yamaha P-515 digital grand piano and the DAW software packages Avid Sibelius and ProTools.

His music aims to provide mindful refuge in our current "age of rage".

I make music because it is where I let go of the have-to’s, and become part of something larger than myself. The language I speak on the keyboard when I improvise expresses a part of me that only comes out there at the moment of creation - when I’m fully connected and in the flow. In those moments when I disappear in the music, those are where I’m most fully alive. The musical question I pose to myself when I play is largely this: how can I release my inhibitions and let go of patterns sufficient to bring something entirely new, unexpected, and enlightening into the world, with structure, precision, clarity, and depth of expression. These pieces are meditations that are of me, but more precisely, they come through me. When I’m in the flow, I’m channeling the energy and only moderately directing it. The challenge is to be open to take risks while maintaining a structure, melody, and tempo that makes it interesting and satisfying enough to keep listening. I keep doing this nightly because it’s a language, because it’s a connection to something greater than myself, and because it’s very very relaxing.
