Bubblegum music emerged in South Africa in the 1980s, at a time when the country was still under apartheid rule. It is a fusion of local traditional rhythms and international pop and electronic music. This genre became very popular and had a significant impact on South African culture, particularly among the country's black youth. Bubblegum music was seen as a way to express the hopes and aspirations of the black population, and it was also a way to escape the political oppression of apartheid.

The end of apartheid in 1994 brought about significant changes in South African society, and this was reflected in the music of the time. Kwaito music emerged as a genre in the early 1990s, just after the end of apartheid. It was a fusion of traditional South African rhythms, house music, and hip hop. Like bubblegum music, kwaito became very popular, particularly among young black South Africans. It was seen as a way to celebrate the new freedom and to express the energy and vitality of the post-apartheid era.

Both bubblegum and kwaito music played an important role in shaping the cultural identity of South Africa in the years following the end of apartheid. They were expressions of the creativity and resilience of the country's black population in the face of political oppression, and they helped to create a sense of unity and pride among South Africans of all races.

 Today, these genres continue to be popular in South Africa, and they are seen as important cultural touchstones that reflect the country's complex history and diverse cultural heritage.
