This week, it's tax time! We crunch the numbers and list a spare bedroom as a home office to boost our returns with the autism-as-a-superpower action thriller The Accountant (2016), directed by Gavin O'Connor, starring Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, J.K. Simmons and Jon Bernthal, along with a murderer's row of character actors in a movie that plays on American cable TV all the time. This is a big time Dumb Guy Movie, and your intrepid hosts have mixed opinions on how much it worked for them, but it makes for lively discussion in our longest show to date.

Before we start in on this week's movie however, we go deep and spoiler-y on Scream VI (now streaming on Paramount+), and Justin gives his thesis on Mission: Impossible 2 being perhaps the most important pop culture event of the 21st century.

The Accountant is not currently available for streaming in Canada at the time of publication, though you can buy it on DVD for $6 at Sunrise Records.

Widely cosidered (by the three of us) to be Brian DePalma's masterpiece, 1981's Blow Out feels like the perfect movie to discuss on the eve of another election in America. But whose scream will be chosen in the end?

You wait for ages for a film about a group of people sequestered in a room, questioning each other, keeping secrets, and repeatedly voting, and two come along at once. But while Juror #2's protagonist wrestled with his conscience, Conclave's Cardinal Lawrence, played by Ralph Fiennes, has little trouble consistently acting out of principle - sadly, many of his colleagues vying for the Catholic Church's vacant papacy don't share his clarity.

Conclave is a marvellously entertaining mystery and thriller, a chamber play in which Fiennes' performance is a complex and deeply felt standout amongst a number of engaging, if less rich, star turns from Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow and Isabella Rossellini. We discuss whether the film is an advert for the Church, how it engages with religion, the striking visual design, liberalism vs. conservatism, representations of gender and nationality... and that magnificent twist. Spoilers within!

Jodi, Bridget and Philip talk about 'Spellbound' (2024), a new animated musical from Netflix and Skydance Animation. This is the second animated feature to come from Skydance after 'Luck' (2022) and is directed and co-written by 'Shrek' director Vicky Jenson. The film takes viewers to the enchanted, or rather, cursed, kingdom of Lumbria, ruled by King Solon and Queen Ellsmere. Their daughter, Princess Ellian, must determine whether to become queen, since the king and queen were transformed into feral monsters and have been hidden away in the palace for a year. Ellian manages to contact two oracles who are unable to reverse the enchantment but point her toward a possible solution. She must guide the two lizard-like monsters on a journey to a lake of light, but must contend with the fact that this perilous quest will likely leave her, her kingdom, and her family forever changed.
