La vida está llena de sorpresas. Y la lógica divina siempre te asombra. ¿Qué poder hay en la debilidad? ¿Qué triunfo en el fracaso? ¿Qué vida hay cuando te mueres?  El camino que Jesús emprende en esta segunda parte de la Buena Noticia según Lucas, supone sufrimiento, rechazo y finalmente su muerte (9:21-27). Es la senda de la Cruz.  

"El que quiera salvar su vida, la perderá, y todo el que pierda su vida por causa de mí", dice Jesús, "la salvará" (v. 24). En su primer disco, la cantante que ahora se llama Sam Phillips, veía que el "Reloj de arena"(Hourglass, 1983) indicaba que este tiempo se acaba. Al "negarse a uno mismo" y encontrar tu vida en Cristo, la muerte es simplemente el paso a "otra tierra", decía Leslie antes de casarse con T-Bone Burnett. El Camino de Jesús lleva a la Gloria, pero no a la fama que el mundo reconoce. La canción que hizo Randy Stonehill, "Entre la gloria y la llama" (The Glory and The Flame 1981), da título al álbum que grabó con la banda Daniel Amos. Es difícil el "Camino a Casa" (A Ride Back Home, 2008), pero es Jesús, el único que puede llevarnos, como le pide en la canción, John Mellencamp, otro artista que grababa con otro nombre en los 80, Cougar.

Si Phillps y Mellencamp dejaron la iglesia, quien permanece es Denzel Washington. La Iglesia de Dios en Cristo es una importante denominación afroamericana donde su padre ha sido pastor 60 años y Denzel lleva más de 30 comprometido con una congregación al oeste de Los Ángeles. La película que se conoce en España como "El fuego de la venganza" tiene un título más fiel al original en Hispanoamérica, "Hombre en llamas" (Man On Fire 2004). Se desarrolla en Ciudad de México con Washington en uno de esos papeles de alcoholizado antiguo oficial de la Marina y ex-agente de la CIA, que ahora sobrevive de guardaespaldas de una niña que interpreta maravillosamente Dakota Fanning. La obra del despreciado hermano de Ridley Scott, Tony, era una historia que quiso hacer en Italia en los años 80. Hay pocas películas que tengan tantas referencias a la Biblia, como esta. Escuchamos varias escenas, que comentamos con la banda sonora original de Harry Gregson-Willliams. 

La salvación es para pecadores como el personaje de Washington y viene por un sacrificio de redención, que no es el nuestro, sino el de Cristo. La invitación del Evangelio es a "subir al tren de la salvación", para el que "no hay que pagar billete". Lo que "necesitas es fe", como dice Curtis Mayfield en la canción que ahora escuchamos en la versión de Rod Stewart con la guitarra del ahora fallecido Jeff Beck (People Get Ready 1985). Esa Gracia es la que hace exclamar sorprendido a Kris Kristofferson, "¿Por qué a mí, Señor?". La escuchamos hoy en la versión que hizo poco antes de morir, Johnny Cash (Why Me Lord, 1991). José de Segovia cuenta la historia que hay detrás de estas canciones y la del cantautor teólogo Michael Card, que popularizó Amy Grant en (I Have Decided, 1982).
