En esta sesión haremos una lectura colectiva poniendo en relación textos de Butler con el libro de Wendy Brown En las ruinas del neoliberalismo y con el de Asad Haider Identidades mal entendidas. Esta sesión de lecturas nos servirá de preparación para el debate de la última sesión del curso. Si se trata de torcer la realidad también se trata de pensar la política queer desde las nuevas realidades autónomas y con capacidad de autodeterminación.

Este párrafo de Butler en “Cuerpos que importar” nos puede valer para lanzar el debate a partir del término queer: “¿Cómo es posible que una palabra que indicaba degradación haya dado un giro tal -haya sido “refundida” en el sentido brechtiano- que termine por adquirir una nueva serie de significaciones afirmativas? (…)
 
Si el término Queer ha de ser un sitio de oposición colectiva, el punto de partida para una serie de reflexiones históricas y perspectivas futuras, tendrá que continuar siendo lo que es en el presente: un término que nunca fue poseído plenamente, sino que siempre y únicamente se retoma, se tierce, se desvía(queer) de un uso anterior y se orienta hacia propósitos políticos apremiantes y expansivos”

En esta última sesión entraremos a debatir cuales son los futuros de las políticas Cuir. Para ello partiremos de las luchas y movimientos LGTBI entrando a algunos de los límites y necesidades de coalición y lucha política que aparecen en la actualidad. La sesión se desarrollará a partir de las preguntas que vayan surgiendo a lo largo del curso y tendrá formato de diálogo con estas preguntas.

Judith Butler, the groundbreaking thinker whose iconic book "Gender Trouble" redefined how we think about gender & sexuality, confronts the attacks on “gender” that have become central to right-wing movements today. Global networks have formed “anti-gender ideology movements” that are dedicated to circulating a fantasy that gender is a dangerous, perhaps diabolical, threat to families, local cultures, civilization—& even “man” himself. Inflamed by the rhetoric of public figures, this movement has sought to nullify reproductive justice, undermine protections against sexual & gender violence, & strip trans & queer people of their rights to pursue a life without fear of violence.

The aim of "Who’s Afraid of Gender?" is not to offer a new theory of gender but to examine how “gender” has become a phantasm for emerging authoritarian regimes, fascist formations, & transexclusionary feminists. In their vital, courageous new book, Butler illuminates the concrete ways that this phantasm of “gender” collects & displaces anxieties & fears of destruction. Operating in tandem with deceptive accounts of “critical race theory” & xenophobic panics about migration, the anti-gender movement demonizes struggles for equality, fuels aggressive nationalism, & leaves millions of people vulnerable to subjugation.

An essential intervention into one of the most fraught issues of our moment, "Who’s Afraid of Gender?" is a bold call to refuse the alliance with authoritarian movements & to make a broad coalition with all those whose struggle for equality is linked with fighting injustice. In addition to numerous academic honors & publications, Butler has published editorials & reviews in The Guardian, The New Statesman, The Nation, Time Magazine, the London Review of Books, & in a wide range of journals, newspapers, radio & podcast programs throughout Europe, Latin America, Central & South Asia, & South Africa. They live in Berkeley.

Join revolutionary philosopher and queer thinker Judith Butler for their unique perspective on why the political right has focused so intently on gender politics. Butler’s newest book is Who’s Afraid of Gender? 

Since their foundational philosophical critique of gender and sexuality, Gender Trouble, Judith Butler has been a singularly important contributor to our contemporary understanding of those categories, including what it can mean to be queer.  Butler’s revolutionary cultural influence and constant drive towards better understandings of our world guarantee that they will remain a widely read canonical writer for decades to come. In recent years, Butler’s theoretical and activist work on gender performance and nonviolence has placed them in conversations around transgender rights, Black Lives Matter, and the Occupy Movement. Their forthcoming book, Who’s Afraid of Gender?, examines why recent authoritarian governments and transexclusionary feminists have focused so much of their energy and ire on gender.

Poulomi Saha is an english professor and the co-Director of the Program in Critical Theory at UC Berkeley. They are currently at work on their second book, Fascination, which investigates the obsession with, and fear of, Indian spirituality across American history, touching on everything from Thomas Jefferson to the docuseries Wild, Wild Country.
