Aujourd’hui, on juge Sofiane en audience de sanction. C’est un MNA : un mineur non accompagné. Sofiane est arrivé en France tout seul à l’âge de 14 ans. Aujourd’hui, il a 18 ans. Il y a 6 mois, il a été reconnu coupable de trafic de stupéfiants et de violences sur un policier. Pour décider de la sanction, on doit tenir compte de son évolution au cours des 6 derniers mois. Dans le jargon de la justice, ça s’appelle : la période de mise à l’épreuve éducative.

Délits mineurs raconte la justice des mineurs depuis le point de vue d’une assesseure au tribunal pour enfants de Bobigny, en Seine-Saint-Denis. Les assesseurs sont des citoyens-bénévoles qui assistent le juge des enfants dans les affaires où des mineurs sont suspectés d’avoir commis des délits graves, parfois des crimes. Il y a un juge et deux assesseurs par audience. En délibéré, les décisions se prennent à la majorité des voix. Le juge et les assesseurs disposent chacun d’une voix, de valeur égale. Chaque épisode de Délits mineurs plonge l’auditeur dans l’histoire d’un jeune, dans le déroulement d’une audience et dans une expérience subjective, parfois déchirante : celle de juger.

Fitton graduated cum laude from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, majoring in American Studies, with emphasis on American History. In college he added science fiction writing and American literature courses. Post college Fitton expanded his writing craft by studying with science fiction and mystery authors as well as screenwriters.
