their meeting came to an abrupt end,
as JENSON's shoulders were seized by some very built men.
"Mrs Peppercorn demands you leave her property."
the speaker's voice was the opposite of wobbly.
"get your hand off me, bozo," JENSON snapped,
grabbing a huge finger, attempting to peel it back.
grip tightened
"JENSON, we won't tell you twice—
consider this us being nice."
"i’m not scared of any of Aunty's brutes.
i’ll take down whoever threw Chompers in the boot!"

Kari, clearly distressed,
JENSON reminded her of a worm as he squirmed beneath the security guard’s chest—
at least seven feet tall and as bald as a baby.
sunlight reflected off the name badge: Davie.
"M’lady, Mrs Peppercorn requests you dine with her this evening as her esteemed guest."
Kari almost choked on her breath.
"don’t trust it, Kari."

immediately, Davie's arms wrapped around JENSON's throat,
impossible to parry.
struggling to get out a word,
one arm flailing,
JENSON drowning in the grip of this early bird.
what more could Kari do
except nod politely like a shy turtle,
and turn away—
JENSON a shade of purple.

"no, Kari, stay—"
a feeble attempt at reversal,
ending up thrown like a curveball,
down the steep driveway...
down the steep... driveway...

"slip 'n' slide,
nah, it ain't like that.
This is a shitty ride,
can't even fight back.
You won’t listen to my facts,
you just turn your back.
Aunty Mary in ear—volume max,

all he could think of was how Kari was,
hoping that Kari was all good,
"cos you know, I've been in that neighbourhood,
i've spent time in that crib, and it's just, it's not good."

Kari refused him, she refused them all,
even when JENSON seized her one night and pressed a kiss upon her,
she knocked him arse-backwards off the curb,
afterwards she got a good look at herself in a puddle,
her face, broad, buck-toothed, freckled as ever,
big lip, thick of jaw, I mean—
"i must be ugly,"

all she wanted was to be a politician,
shaking up the status quo,
yes, she knows, a wishful vision,
it's not as if she's the only woman in this house,
a lot of people are far prettier than she is,
mrs Peppercorn provides feasts for her ambitious guests every night,
finish it off with drunken dance to music of the pipe,
"why are you being so kind to me?" she wanted to scream,
whenever some young man paid her a compliment, it's like—
"what'd you want?
what'd you mean? What'd you want?"

JENSON solved the mystery the very next day,
after he motioned her to meet him by the front gate,
JENSON had overheard the senator and all his underlings laughing
as they relieved themselves in the bushes,
he told her what they said,
it was a wager, all those youngins that started it,
it was the same three youngins that acted so courteous and flirting, it's—
(sharp inhale)
well, each man required to buy in with a hundred bucks,
the whole sum going to whoever claimed her maidenhood saying they got to—
well, you know it just ain't good!"

"i'm just telling you, Kari,
it's not—it's not good,
you know I don't believe—
i don't believe it's good!"
