Grootkolk Grief – Ode to the Brown Hyena and African Wildcat, is No. 3 in Kalahari Kaleidoscope by Carol Ann Weaver, a cello/piano suite composed in the Kalahari, S. Af, Nov-Dec, 2023 (completed in Ontario, Canada 2024).  The Brown Hyena had been mauled by a lion and was dying.  The African Wildcat was desperate and starving, during the draught of 2023. Meerkat and Drongo, No. 4 in Kalahari Kaleidoscope by Carol Ann Weaver, a cello/piano suite composed in Kalahari, S. Af., 2023, (completed in Ontario, Canada 2024) The meerkat finds food, but the drongo gives alarm calls which cause the meerkat to drop its food and runs away, so that the drongo then takes the meerkat's food! Listen to the Silence by Carol Ann Weaver, for soprano and piano, was composed in 1999 during my first visit to Kalahari, S. Africa. The magic of silence was not only haunting and mysterious, but compelling, as if bells were ringing. Desert Gloria by Carol Ann Weaver, performed by Grebel Chapel Choir+friends, Kate Steiner, conductor; Ben Bolt-Martin, cello, in concert at Grebel/UWaterloo, Nov. 13, 2024. I composed Desert Gloria in Kalahari Desert, South Africa from November-December, 2023, finishing it in Waterloo, Canada early 2024. The Kalahari was unusually hot, arid & stressful for all animals and plants, with no rain while we were there. The Auob and Nossob Rivers were dry. Underground water sustained some of the trees, and water holes sustained some of the animals. Desert Gloria reveals pain, struggle, courage, and beauty of the inhabitants, while singing glory to all who survive and all who wait, thirst, and hope.  (text below)

Rivers dry, no water, dry as sand, rivers drying.
Two rivers in the desert, no water running by.
Two rivers in the desert and both dry
Two rivers in the desert, no rain is falling down.
Two rivers in the desert, no water for this ground.

The lion and cheetah, the leopard, hyena, are thirsty, empty.
The kudu and eland, the turtle doves, bee-eaters,
korhaan and weaver birds, vultures and eagles are thirsty, empty.
The jackal and springbok, the drongo and steenbok,
the hawks and foxes and geckos and mongooses,
owls and meerkat and badger and wildcat,
giraffe and wildebeest, gemsbok and hartebeest
thirsty, empty.

All desert is thirsty, and all the rivers are empty.
All land, all rivers, all the desert is empty, thirsty.
Two rivers in the desert are waiting for rain.

Waters flowing in the earth, waters flowing deep.
Rivers flow beneath the earth, rivers flowing deep.
Roots reaching under earth, roots reaching deep.
Dew gathering in the morning, dew water sweet, earth water deep.
Roots reaching to the water, earth waiting sleeps,
earth drinking deep, waiting sleeps,
earth drinks deep, sleeps deep.

Flow, waters sweet, and flowing, flow waters deep, and flowing…
Flowing water under the desert, water flowing under sand,
flowing under the earth, flowing under the sand.

Glory to the desert, gloria to the rivers…

On the journey through the desert we see endless expanses of sand, pass camel caravans and small oases before arriving at the end of the journey in a small picturesque village on the edge of the desert where a small group of musicians have gathered.
