Unable to draw high ratings with adult contemporary, KIIS-FM began to evolve, first to Top 40 in 1976, then dance and disco music in 1978, and back to Top 40 in 1980. KIIS (AM) would keep its soft rock/AC format until late 1979. Just prior to this, Gannett Company purchased both the KIIS-AM-FM station pair and Combined Communications. In 1981, the format of KIIS (AM) was changed to religious talk and new call letters KPRZ were adopted.
Rick Dees joined the station for mornings in July 1981 after KHJ switched formats to country music. Fill-in personality Dave Sebastian (Williams), working both the AM and FM stations at the time, hosted the vacated FM morning show until the arrival of Dees due to a non-compete clause in his contract. 
With Dees in mornings, KIIS became a CHR powerhouse in Los Angeles.

Jeff Thomas has imaged radio stations all over the world in a career that has spanned 45 years. He spent 8 years with KIIS FM Los Angeles as Creative Services Imaging Director where he imaged the station and developed the national ‘KISS’ sound for Clear Channel, followed by 3 years launching the Howard Stern satellite channels on Sirius Satellite Radio, Howard 100 and 101. Previous positions include 2MMM-FM Sydney Australia (8 yrs), Virgin Radio London UK (3 yrs) & Capital Radio London (2 yrs).

In that time he has mixed well over 300 live-to-air performances from artists including Robert Plant & Jimmy Page, Bon Jovi, Sting, Jack Bruce, Noel Gallagher, Elvis Costello and Sheryl Crow.

Twenty-five years ago Jeff launched KILLER HERTZ; a sound design & imaging library used by radio and TV stations throughout the US and all over the world and featured in numerous international movie trailers, including Paranormal Activity, Die Hard 5, 2012 & Apple TV’s Central Park.

In 2010 Jeff created PHANTOM PRODUCER; an online imaging service and web app. The service was granted a US patent in 2016 and has grown to now offer 13 different radio formats, heard on well over a thousand radio stations across the US. Jeff Thomas Productions Pty Ltd was purchased by Gemini 13.LLC in 2021.
