Suseenthiran had written a script for the sequel of 
Vennila Kabadi Kuzhu
 (2009) soon after the release of the film, with the story taking forward the tale of the kabadi team following the death of their captain, portrayed by Vishnu in the original film. In March 2015, it was announced that Lakshman Narayan had been signed on to play the lead role after Suseenthiran was impressed with his performance in 
Jeeva
 (2014), while Pasupathy would portray his father.[1][2] Aishwarya Dutta was also brought in to feature as the lead actress, before the film was put on hold.[3]


beautifully structured as two lengthy sequences (poor boy and rich girl fall in love over five days of a village festival/pongal celebration, and small town team tries to win kabadi match in madurai partially in hopes to catch her eye or to win enough to be someone or anyone) bookended by prologue and epilogue sections that reveal the deep cathartic pain at this film's heart.


the fair complaint is that the kabadi scenes themselves fall short. it's a very beautiful and complicated game, and both the physical performances and staging seems far more sophisticated than the camera work; most of it seems edited to cover up a lack of the right shots. since everything else lands with energy and invention that's not as much a problem as it would be in nearly any other film.
