She’s back with her second release of the year, Kate Stein presents Psychworld. The NYC connection tickles ears and moves bodies with her bumper EP, diving headfirst into a frenetic rave state.

Across the two original tracks, Kate slips effortlessly between distortion and intensity, blending upbeat psy~sounds and nostalgic vocal chops - guaranteed to get crowds sweating.

Inviting friends to keep the pleasure rolling, underground icons Roe Deers, Mufti + Remain remix the project. Each with their own distinct touch, they round out a tastefully psychedelic, wavy pack for the darkest of dance floors.

The NYC based imprint 99FVR is a platform to redefine peak time sounds. It's an expansive state where both euphoria and discomfort can equally coexist.

Episode 32 of In the Basement with Paul Inflyte brings some serious dancefloor weapons. Decius kicks things off with the dark and dirty disco the Leaf Label, while Elfenberg's "Big Boys" adds that unmistakable Studio Barnhus swagger. Damian Lazarus turns up with a massive new single feat. Jem Cooke on vocals, "Searchin" get’s a Radio Slave workout that you’ll be hearing on the dancefloor for a long time to come; this is straight from the Crosstown Rebels' treasure chest. Elsewhere we have some gems from Eskimo Recordings and Soundway in the mix, as well as Solomon giving Caribou a proper workout.

"Smiling like a rainbow, Burning like an asteroid”   

Clubland is filled with duos, sometimes they grew up sharing bunk beds, sometimes they met on a dancefloor, or sometimes -as with Lord Fascinator & Kate Stein- they met on a tropical island after one had commissioned the other to create several giant monsters for a music video. Fast forward through ten years of costumes, chemicals, religious art projects and "Mad Max yoga retreats", they have finally cemented their relationship in the studio with their Primary EP, 4 tracks of psychedelic synth-pop, cowboy disco and cosmically inclined iridescent electronica.   

Living in LA in 2022, where they found themselves sharing a crumbling castle turret, the EP started to take shape when Kate - the aforementioned monster maker and now up & coming DJ and producer - shared her latest demos with Lord Fascinator. Aided and abetted by both the musical ghosts of Laurel Canyon and a regular supply of caffeine the pair began to craft these demos into an EP that segues from sublime synth pop odes to chemical love and intoxicating attraction through to country disco without missing a beat.   

The EP kicks off with Chemistry, a song whose spacey synth arpeggios wrap themselves around trippy house beats and a bass line that pulses like the heartbeat of a planet. It's a third eye opener of a track, one that kicks down the doors of perception only to find a secret nightclub filled with neon smiles hidden behind and perfectly sets the playful mood for everything that follows. As it happens what follows is the cosmically inclined synth-pop and trance inducing disco of Asteroid. A paean to "falling in love on drugs" Asteroid somehow finds the hitherto unknown sweet spot between Spiritualized and Lipps Inc. and, thanks in no small part to Lord Fascinator's celebratory chorus, blazes like its namesake across the night sky.   

So far, so cosmic. What you may not have been expecting then is country touched club banger Horse House, a track that combines a galloping hypnotic house beat and pulsating synths with all manner of Morricone'esque whistles, lonesome guitar twangs, equine snorts and, of course, the repeated chant that "there's a horse in this house". The track may have started life as a joke but its effect on dancefloors has been anything but and Horse House joins the select ranks of other fine western themed classics that have curiously littered the history of club music.  

Finally, to close out the EP, we have Le Petit Martien, which despite its extraterrestrial title and occasional French lyrics, maintains the western vibes, cantering along at a steady 110bpm. It’s a bit like the impossible love child of say the Bad Seeds’ Red Right Hand, Serge Gainsbourg’s Bonnie and Clyde and one of Todd Terje’s more playful moments, in other words the perfect way for this free spirited EP to ride off into the sunset.

Biography
 Having cut her teeth in the art world working in spatial design Kate Stein made her musical debut in 2021, her hypnotic take on house quickly seeing her make appearances on labels sick as Roam Recordings, Playground Records, TAU and Rotten City.  Lord Fascinator meanwhile began his musical career as the frontman for Australian rock band Children Collide. Since relocating to NY and moving behind the decks he's DJ'd and performed all over the world sharing stages with the likes of The Avalanches and Tame Impala, been remixed by Prins Thomas, collaborated with Simple Symmetry, scored Hollywood films and produced immersive dining experiences in Mexico.

Bedroom Sessions 5 . 2 . 25

This week's bedroom mix had a net gain in payoff versus risk. Again, not perfect, but I don;'t expect them to be when I don't plan them. Most of these didn't even have extra cue points! It is also much darker than last week's, and some of these haven't had their time in the sun yet. But, oh boy, did they shine. No idea how I overlook some of these until the last minute.

A highlight of their recent debut EP for Eskimo Recordings, Kate Stein & Lord Fascinator's Asteroid saw the psychotropic duo take us on a joyful joyride through the cosmos, its melodic synth-pop and trance inducing disco finding a hitherto unguessed at sweet spot somewhere between Spiritualized and Lipps Inc. Too much fun to keep to themselves our LA based duo have invited the likes of Aeroplane, Eli Escobar and BĘÃTFÓØT to join them on the trip and add their own touch to the track before it burns up on re-entry.

First up is high flying Belgian producer and DJ Aeroplane, who returns to Eskimo 15 years after the label released his acclaimed debut LP. Responsible for some of the most iconic remixes around, you know you're in for a good time with Vito at the controls and he once again delivers a masterclass in pairing indie vocals and pop melodies with chrome plated disco beats and sky high synths. The result, a joyous celebration of love, chemicals and chemical induced love, sure to echo out over festival fields this summer.

It's always a good sign when you see Eli Escobar's name on a track's credits and the NY producer has been delivering killer remixes for the likes of Lana Del Rey, M.I.A. and Honey Dijon for well over two decades now. Stripping Asteroid back to just the vocals and slowly but surely building it back up from there, Escobar delivers a killer synth-heavy house track for when you want to reset the vibe in the club and take things to the next level. It's set to a slow burning fuse but when it all kicks in this Asteroid explodes like a firework.

Finally, taking time out from drumming duties with Red Axes Udi Naor slips into his BĘÃTFÓØT alias to deliver a frenetic, peak time remix of Asteroid. Throwing everything from pummelling martial drums, rave stabs, urgent synths and pitched up vocals into the mix, Naor's remix burns through the sky like a particularly wildly piloted UFO, a sci-fi synth stunner with all strobes set to stun.

The Why people dance question was asked for the first time in Lithuania back in 2013 but it gained a worldwide echo in its 8 years of existence. Run by @pauliuskamblevicius with the help of @experimentsserial and a network of collaborators, the online electronic music platform and label keeps its heart open for new friends and treasure finds but its filter tight and deep underground. Tune into WPD channels on Soundcloud, YouTube and Bandcamp.

As the son of a professional flamenco singer, Thomas has always been surrounded by music.  Exposure to flamenco influenced him because it has a dynamic range of emotions—from the "deep singing" style of cante hondo, to the more lively alegrias.  He has also worked in the corporate, independent, and online music industry for a number of years.  At one point he was a Content Manager for the Electronic Music genre at MP3.com, where he screened over 500 songs per day.  Exposure to a wide range of music explains the range of genres in his mixes—he uses whatever carries the mood.  From listening to Umm Kulthum's "Enta Omri" in his childhood, to New Wave and  Industrial as a teen, it became difficult for him to stick to one sound. Though vinyl was his original format of choice when he started in the 90s, the use of digital mixing has helped him better form soundscapes to expand your headspace.  Let him play with your moods for a spell.
