Based on Nemtsov's 2016 opera "Sacrifice" this suite was written and premiered by Klangforum Wien on December 12th,  2022 in Konzerthaus, Vienna. The final movement captured here from the premiere, is a lyrical conclusion to the whole suite featuring the electric guitar as a musical protagonist. I vividly recall the joy of playing the part with its rich microtonal harmonies and tactile textures as it bridged between the musical material coming from the ensemble and the electronics.

이제 많은 사람들은 ‘음악 감상’을 위해 음악을 틀지 않습니다. 음악 엔터테인먼트 산업은 더이상 음악을 최우선 순위로 두지 않습니다. 번화가에 나가면 최소 10곡 이상의 음악이 경쟁하듯이 우리의 귀를 때립니다. 이 정도로 음악이 넘쳐났던 시기는 이전에 없었습니다. 이러한 세상에서, 우리는 과연 무엇을 음악으로 받아들일까요? 그리고 그 기준은 무엇일까요?

작품 ＜Our Jukebox is Acting Up＞은 오늘날 음악이 갖는 의미에 대한 고찰에서 출발합니다. 앞서 말했듯, 우리는 삶 속에서 정말 많은 소리들과 마주하고 있습니다. 하지만 그 모든 것이 우리에게 음악으로 다가오지는 않을 것입니다. (특히 한국에서) 자동차가 후진할 때 나오는 ‘엘리제를 위하여’는 음악일까요? 옆 사람의 휴대전화 벨소리는 과연 어떨까요? 그저 스포트라이트의 차이는 아닐까요?
이러한 질문들을 출발점으로 하여, 작품은 스스로 ‘사회적 맥락에서의 음악’을 인지하고 그것으로부터 도망을 다니게 됩니다. 작품 내에서 발생하는 사건들과 그로 인한 대조는 이를 더욱 명확히 하고, 그동안 감춰져 왔던 내재적 청취 경험에 대한 주목도를 높이도록 유도합니다. 

네, 주크박스는 이미 그 역할을 잃어버렸습니다!

Nowadays, the vast majority of music consumers do not turn the music on just to “listen” to it. Music itself is not a priority anymore in the music entertainment business too. In downtown, you can easily experience more than 10 ear-piercing songs hitting your cochlea. This means that we’re living in an era of the greatest musical abundance in human history. In this world, what kind of things do we perceive as “music”? Are there any strict yardsticks to judge music and non-music?

My piece ＜우리 주크박스가 망가졌어요＞ starts from the meaning and definition of the music these days. As I said previously, we face a tremendous amount of sonic events in our everyday lives. But, not all of them can be “a music” for you. Is ＜Ode to Joy＞ coming out from various jingles “a music”? How about the ringing cellphone of an anonymous person sitting nearby? Don't you think it's just a difference of spotlight? 
Starting from these kind of questions, this piece recognizes what ‘music in the context of society’ is itself and keeps escaping from it. Events happening inside this piece and the contrast derived from these events maximize the escape, and make listeners concentrate on the experience of ‘inherent listening’.

Yup, the JUKEBOX has now gone wrong already!

Yaron Deutsch (Tel Aviv, 1978), is a guitarist mainly known for his work in the field of contemporary (classical) music. He is the founder and artistic director of the chamber quartet NIKEL and a frequent guest in Europe’s finest groups & orchestras dedicated to contemporary music. Most often he plays with the acclaimed Klangforum Wien & Musikfabrik ensembles.

As a soloist he performed with the Israeli Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Luzerner Sinfonieorchester, Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg, Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien, Sinfonica Nazionale della Rai (Turin) & SWR Symphonieorchester; playing under conductors: Sylvain Camberling, Titus Engl, Peter Eötvös, Zubin Mehta, Emilio Pomàrico, Peter Rundel, Ilan Volkov & Bas Wiegers to name a few.

Recordings featuring his playing are available on Col Legno, Kairos, Neos, Sub Rosa and Wergo labels.

Apart from his performative activities, he is a professor for contemporary music at the University of Music in Basel (Hochschule für Musik FHNW / Sonic Space Basel) and guitar tutor at the Darmstadt International Summer Courses.
As well he directs the International Festival for Contemporary Chamber Music in Tel Aviv – “Tzlil Meudcan” (In Hebrew: “Updated Tone”).

Fundamental for his experience were and are the meetings with Beat Furrer, with whom he studied at the Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Graz (2005/2006), Rostock Summer Campus 2009 and IMPULS 2005, 2007,  2009.
After his studies with Renato Miani in Udine (Italy) he attended the IRCAM Cursus 1 in composition and computer music 2010-2011, the  Pierluigi Billone’s seminar/course Klangwege at the Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Graz (Austria) and the Stefano Gervasoni’s masterclass at the TEMA Academy in Milan (Italy).

Simone Movio received the “Komponisten-Förderpreise 2014” of the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung, he has been chosen as composer in residence at the Internationales Künstlerhaus Villa Concordia in Bamberg (Germany) concerning the season 2016/2017.

He won (among others) the Wiener Konzerthauses Composition Contest “Towards the Next 100 Years” (2012) - String Quartet (Wien, Austria), the "International Composition Competition Franz Schubert and Modern Music 2011" (Graz, Austria), the "IVME International Composition Contest 2011" (two first prizes in the two different categories - Antwerp, Belgium), the “Gianni Bergamo Music Award 2007 – Composition” (Lugano, Switzerland), the “Hamburger Klangwerktage 2007 – 2nd International Composition Contest, Lied Unlimited” (Hamburg, Germany)

He has been selected for the "9e Forum de la Jeune Création Musicale 2011" (SIMC – Clamart, France) and “IMPULS 2009” (Wien/Graz, Austria) as nominated composer.

He held composition seminars in the Universität für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Graz (Austria),  the institute Creama Hanyang University of Seoul (South Korea), National University of Music Bucharest (Romania), L. Cherubini conservatory in Firenze (Italy), the J. Tomadini conservatory in Udine (Italy).

Some of his pieces have been performed by important artists and ensembles (such as Beat Furrer, Enno Poppe, Clement Power, Klangforum Wien, Szymanowski Quartet, Ensemble Recherche, Sigma Project) in several events and places such as: Festival Présences-Radio France (Paris, France), Wiener Konzerthaus (Wien, Austria), Teatro La Fenice di Venezia (Italy), Tage für neue Musik (Zürich, Switzerland), KLANG Festival Copenhagen (Denmark), IRCAM (Paris, France), Festival GAMO (Firenze, Italy), Tchaikovsky Conservatory (Moscow, Russia), Helmut-List Halle (Graz, Austria).

The Austrian label “col legno” has just released his first portrait CD “Tuniche”, performed by Klangforum Wien and SIGMA Project.
