The SBA’s new Made in America Manufacturing Initiative aims to fuel a manufacturing resurgence that will reshore manufacturing and revitalize communities across the country. SBA Administrator Kelly Loeffler kicked off the initiative in the Great Lakes Region, highlighting the key role that manufacturing plays in the region’s economy. As part of this initiative, SBA created an Onshoring Portal, a free tool to connect small businesses to a network of 1 million domestic suppliers. Also, SBA wants to hear from small businesses about burdensome regulations that get in the way. To share your challenge via the Red Tape Hotline. 

Michigan small business owners can leverage the U.S. Small Business Administration’s extensive network of lenders and resource to help them start, grow and expand. BACKGROUND ON EVERETT 

Everett M. Woodel, Jr., is the new Great Lakes Regional Administrator, overseeing operations in the six-state region, which includes Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin. His appointment started in March.

Previously, Everett served 6 years as the SBA District Director in the SBA office in Columbus, Ohio. In January-February, Everett spent a month in Washington, D.C., as Acting Administrator until Administrator Kelly Loeffler was confirmed by the Senate.
He held executive roles in both the public and private sectors, including serving as Regional Director for VEIC and Director of Business Development at American Structurepoint, Inc. He also held leadership positions in Ohio state government, including Director of Public Affairs for the Ohio Treasurer’s Office and Director of Operations for the Industrial Commission of Ohio.
Everett’s mom owned a small business (bakery) for 45 years in Fremont, Ohio, where he grew up.

Every year, EGLE releases an end-of-year report. Are there any milestones or initiatives you’re particularly proud of that were included in this year’s report?

Brownfield redevelopment was highlighted in the report. Could you explain what the Brownfield Redevelopment Program is and its significance for communities across Michigan?

What kind of measurable impact has the program had on Michigan&#39;s economy, environment and quality of life?

The governor recently released her FY 26 budget recommendations. How do her
recommendations support brownfield redevelopment as well as environmental sustainability and economic development?

Contaminated and abandoned sites once seen as community liabilities are now thriving hubs of economic growth and revitalization across Michigan. Since 2019, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s (EGLE) Brownfield Redevelopment Program has helped create 19,000 jobs, transforming 402 properties into vibrant spaces for businesses, housing and public use.

Backed by more than $160 million in investments, this program is a testament to Michigan’s leadership in responsible economic development—combining environmental stewardship with community renewal. These projects not only create jobs but also breathe new life into neighborhoods, turning challenges into opportunities for growth.
