Robert Cunningham's Vocalise in Seven, for mezzo-soprano, flute, cello, and piano.  The new composition. based on Prelude No. 4 from the composer's Nine Preludes for Piano Solo, was completed in June 2024.  The recording features acclaimed mezzo-soprano Isola Jones, whose illustrious career at the Metropolitan Opera includes more than 500 performances over 16 seasons.  She is accompanied by Leslie Lewis (flute), Sarah Langford (cello), and the composer at the piano.  Vocalise in Seven combines the dreamy, free-floating sensation that 7/4 meter often evokes in listeners with a detachment, inherent in the vocalise genre, from words and from the meanings that tether words to reality.

Vocalise in Seven by Robert Cunningham

Composer-pianist Robert Cunningham's many works for piano, various chamber ensembles, voice, chorus, and piano and orchestra reflect a highly original, complex, and chromatic Romantic style. He studied piano with Loren Withers at Duke University (graduating in 1970) and with Katherine Bacon at Juilliard.  Later turning to composing, he obtained a master's degree in composition from Georgia State University in 1995.  Based on a dissertation analyzing Rachmaninoff's harmonic practices, he received his Ph.D. in music theory from Florida State University in 1999. He is the author of Sergei Rachmaninoff: A Bio-Bibliography, published by Greenwood Press.
