This week, Jesus goes deeper with the disciples as he invites them to “Follow Me” and explains the TRUTH about Messiah and what it means to follow Him! Throughout my lifetime, I have heard many invitations given at churches and evangelistic events that fail to meet Jesus’ standard of an invitation to follow Him!  Many people relate this invitation to a deeper level discipleship, but make no mistake, to trust in Jesus and His Euangellion means a life that is surrendered to His Lordship, that is ultimately loyal to HIM (daily, even to death), and follows Him wherever he goes!!! It is a high calling, a blessed calling, and a costly calling!!

Jesus is king. When he said, in Luke 19, that he had need of a donkey colt for riding into Jerusalem, he knew he was fulfilling prophecy, that he was claiming Messiahship and Kingship, and that he was coming to die...and rise. So about that colt, he said, "The Lord has need of it." He had plans for it--good, saving plans--and he has plans for us in this new year. In 2025, of our souls, our lives, our hopes, our possessions, our health, if we should hear, "The Lord has need of it," will we turn over to him what we have stewarded for him?

Can a good man go bad? Can an admirable man turn out to be rotten inside? We read about the surprising exposure of Judas Iscariot in Luke 21:37-22:13. He ultimately wouldn't pay the cost of discipleship, of following Jesus above all else. Jesus wasn't going to change his mission or character or role, so that means Judas had to--and we have to also--but Judas just couldn't. From Judas we learn about assessing spiritual abuse and false Christianity disguised as true. And then we see Jesus, never fooled, always set to be our sacrifice for personal sin. We learn to put our eyes on Jesus, not on our personal agendae or on the Judases who look so good. We learn to make Jesus, not mascot, but Lord!

I am saved. Now what? Salvation is not just an invitation to Heaven. It’s also an invitation to surrender your life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. What is Lordship and how do I surrender to it? Jesus is the master of every situation. We make a lot of plans, like Saul was doing in Acts 9, but Jesus is always in control. We're playing checkers, while he's playing chess. So we can do a little holy crowing about how awesome Jesus is. That can lead us to more desperate pleading for Jesus to reign in each new scenario we encounter. And that can lead us to humble kneeling before him as we submit to follow him. No enemy is greater than our Champion. No one of us is too small for our Champion to notice. No minister is more important than our Champion. And this situation is no more challenging for our Champion than the last! He's the Chessmaster!
