This is my final project for SO210: Race, Language and Justice at Emerson College. For this project, students were tasked with exploring social transformation. They could do this in a variety of mediums, and I wanted to express my passion for journalism with a podcast format. I chose to explore bilingual education in the U.S. as a means for social transformation. In this podcast, I present my own research, and I also sit down with Dr. Matthew Knoester, a professor at Ripon College and bilingual education scholar. 

The Transformation Conversation: Bilingual Education

Gestures: every known language has them, and there's a growing body of research on how they fit into communication. But academic literature can be hard to dig into on your own. So Lauren has spent the past 5 years diving into the gesture literature and boiling it down into a tight 147 page book.  

In this episode, your hosts Lauren Gawne and Gretchen McCulloch get enthusiastic about Lauren's new book, Gesture: A Slim Guide from Oxford University Press. Is it a general audience book? An academic book? A bit of both. (Please enjoy our highlights version in this episode, a slim guide to the Slim Guide, if you will.) We talk about the wacky hijinks gesture researchers have gotten up to with the aim of preventing people from gesturing without tipping them off that the study is about gesture, including a tricked-out "coloured garden relax chair" that makes people "um" more, as well as crosslinguistic gestural connections between signed and spoken languages, and how Gretchen's gestures in English have been changing after a year of ASL classes. Plus, a few behind-the-scenes moments: Lauren putting a line drawing of her very first gesture study on the cover, and how the emoji connection from Because Internet made its way into Gesture (and also into the emoji on your phone right now).

1. You’re offering something that people actually want
2. You have proper sales systems in place
3. Are your conversion rates really that low? (Compare with peers in your niche)

Still not solved?
Try changing the sales vehicle.

Instead of selling through an automated email sequence, try:
- Offering a free course that sells your flagship course
- Promoting your product through regular live streams
- Running webinars

Your audience might not feel comfortable buying through emails, especially if your emails are in a language they’re still learning.

While Black and Latino consumers make up approximately 30% of the U.S. population, early multicultural campaigns received less than 5% of national advertising budgets, a gap that has improved slightly but remains a major challenge today. Even now, multicultural efforts are often the first budgets cut when financial pressures arise, undermining brand loyalty and growth opportunities.
There has been a shift from language-driven strategies to culture-driven ones. In the past, Spanish-language media buys were often seen as enough. Today, success demands deeper cultural insight, recognizing that diverse consumers live multigenerational, multiracial, and bilingual realities. Authentic connection, not just language, is now the key to meaningful engagement.
Brands like Honda offer a blueprint through initiatives like Honda Stage, which uses music as a universal passion point to unite diverse audiences organically without forcing segmentation. Meanwhile, missteps like Target’s recent DEI pullback show how quickly consumer trust can erode when companies abandon their multicultural commitments.
Another critical takeaway is the growing importance of first-party data and minority-owned media partnerships. As privacy regulations limit traditional targeting methods, collaborating with platforms that genuinely understand their audiences becomes even more valuable.
Ultimately, brands must shift away from chasing fleeting viral moments and instead focus on building real, lasting community relationships.
