The story behind this, or at least the first verse, is... I had a girlfriend that broke up with me during my senior year of high school. Of course, it was totally my fault -- I had it coming.

However, some good came out of it (I know that's not the lesson here but hear me out). Up to that point, I had never taken the time to learn how to play the guitar. I had one that my parents had bought me when I was much younger, but it just collected dust.

Well, in January 1984, just days before my 18th birthday, I suddenly had a lot more time on my hands (see above, for a few months anyway) and well, I picked it up and started to learn it. By the time I went into the Navy that following February (1985), I could play reasonably well. A few months later I met Ron Black and we learned to write songs together.

I know, the lesson here is don't cheat on your girlfriend. Don't be an idiot as I was. As I've said in so many words, I'd have broken up with me too. 

Anyway, this is an ode to her and my way of saying a very weird "thanks" -- ain't life funny?
