Bradley Cooper, who also directed, co-wrote, and produced "Maestro," plays celebrated composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein. The film follows Bernstein from his unexpected Carnegie Hall debut to the autumn years of his life. It's Cooper's second film as a director, after 2018's luscious remake of "A Star Is Born." He took on the responsibility of portraying Bernstein with excitement and gratitude. "'In A Star Is Born,' the nuclear weapon was always Lady Gaga's voice," said Cooper. "For 'Maestro' I figured it was mine to mess up because I had a nuclear weapon and that's Leonard Bernstein's music. Just the breadth of it, how diverse it is, and how moving it is."

Following the screening, Deadline's chief film critic Pete Hammond, who can also be seen on KCET's Must See Movies, moderates a Q&A with co-stars Carey Mulligan and Matt Bomer.

IT’S OSCAR SEASON FOLKS and there’s a bitter buzz in the air about who got nominated and who didn’t but our side theme this month has us watching the remainder of the best picture nominees that we have yet to discuss. We talk about some rather forced cultural commentary surrounding the Barbie nominations and what exactly that commentary means. Then we get into one of this year’s THIRSTIEST movies nominated by the Academy and it seems like proper Oscar bait from, maybe, 25 years ago. It seems like the ultra dramatic side universe of Bradley Cooper directing himself is just getting started and what a nice little terrarium Mr. Cooper has built for himself. It’s called “MAESTRO” and it stars Bradley Cooper & Carey Mulligan. Cooper plays the American Composer, Leonard Bernstein, and examines the relationship between the homosexual Leonard and his beard/wife, Felicia Montealegre with so much concentration and minimal emotional resonance. This movie makes Barbie seem restrained. Truly.

We find Maestro, Bradley Cooper's latest actor-director star vehicle, which dramatises the life of iconic conductor Leonard Bernstein, to be dishonest, illustrative, and superficial Oscar bait. We also find it cinematically ambitious at times, with great production values - not many films of this type are being made with $80 million budgets. A mixed bag.

I’m sure it’s obvious that we’re talking about the Jerome Robbins/Robert Wise/Stephen Sondheim/Leonard Bernstein joint from 1961 “WEST SIDE STORY” starring Natalie Wood, Richard Beymer, Russ Tamblin & Rita Moreno. The American take on “Romeo & Juliet” won Best Picture for that year and is the ground floor for many people’s introduction to musicals.
