This morning, we are gathered on [Gadigal] Country and we acknowledge and pay our respect to their Elders past, present and emerging.

I pay my respect to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who have contributed to the defence of Australia in times of peace and war, and I would also like to acknowledge all current and former members of the Australian Defence Force here with us today, as well as the family members of Defence personnel.

Thank you for your service and sacrifice, and thank you to the families of our Defence personnel for all your contributions and the support you provide to your loved ones.
Today, we gather with reverence and solemnity to commemorate a significant chapter in our nation's history, a chapter that embodies the courage, sacrifice, and indomitable spirit of our Australian service men and women. On this hallowed occasion of Anzac Day, we come together to honour their legacy and to reflect upon the profound impact their actions have had on our nation and the world.

Anzac Day holds a special place in our collective consciousness, a day that goes beyond mere remembrance – it is a day of deep contemplation and gratitude. It's a day when we remember not only the gallant soldiers who stood on the shores of Gallipoli but also those who have served in conflicts and peacekeeping missions throughout the decades.

The story of our Anzacs begins in the midst of World War I, when brave soldiers from Australia and New Zealand landed on the rugged shores of Gallipoli. Their landing marked a pivotal moment in our history – a moment when our young nations forged their identities through sacrifice, resilience, and the unwavering Anzac spirit.

As we remember the battles fought, the lives lost, and the hardships endured, we must also recognise the enduring spirit of camaraderie that emerged from those testing times.
