Meine Nostalgie

School project based on a live recording session of a jazz/pop ensemble from Harold Washington College's music department.  

This session was recorded as follows:

Drums: Two AKG C414s as overhead microphones, one AKG C451 B for the hi-hat, one Sennheiser MD 441 for the snare top, I used 3 Sennheiser MD 421 II  microphones  - one for snare bottom wires and one for each tom (1 rack and 1 floor) as for the kick drum I had an AKG D112 in the drum head sound port and one Beyerdynamic M88 for the beater. 

Bass: I had an Orange amp with an Orange Little Bass Thing Bass Head. I placed an Electro-Voice RE20 in the center of the cone, as well as taking D.I.  from the bass head.

Guitar: Fender Champion 20 Amp with a Shure SM57 placed in the middle of the cone. 

Keyboard: Nord Stage 4 - D.I. from the keyboard.

Sax: Shure SM57 aimed at the bell.

Flute: Shure SM7B above from the player aimed towards mouth.
 
Singers: I gave both singers AKG C414s.

Placement Note - The drums were in a sound booth at the back of the room. The guitar and bass amps were placed in corners, angled at 45 degrees to avoid direct sound reflection. The singers were positioned as far away from the drummer as possible, and the keyboard was placed behind the booth, maintaining eye contact with the drummer for cues. The brass section was on the opposite side from the singers. Live sessions inevitably have some degree of bleed. My objective in positioning each performer was to minimize bleed as much as possible.

Plastic Royale A.K.A. Tompa Minus who is born and raised in Stockholm Sweden, finds the inspiration in deep house and classic house music but he doesn’t really like placing his music in compartments. If there is a groove then there´s a groove. 

Over the years, Plastic Royale has released a number of house songs with everything from instrumental to vocal house songs. With Chicago 86, he was inspired by the classic old sch
ool house sound that was born in Chicago in the mid-80s.
With PARIS 62 (Plastic Royale's most played song) he takes you into the wonderful world of French dance music (you must listen to it).

The collaboration with Ashley Slater has resulted in a couple of really groovy and bassy vocal house songs.

His interest for music has been there for as long as he can remember. From sneaking into his older brothers room at a young age to play vinyl to spending his first hard earned money on a Technics 1210 turntable. The first records he bought were mostly funk and soul and the love for the genres has followed him ever since. Another big influence in Tompas  life was the bootleg records called  Swemix, that lead him into the world om mixing and DJing.
