BRAINWASHING was composed in 2023 on behalf the Amstel Saxophone Quartet (NL) and the Ministry of Culture, Luxembourg.

I had the idea for this piece in 2022 after reading a very interesting article about the book Brainwashing, the science of thought control  by Kathleen Taylor.

Brainwashing is ubiquitous: written media, social media, tv, advertising, politics, religion . . . 

But I was primarily interested in the background, the psychology of brainwashing/thought control.

So, this piece may be understood as a psychological manipulation set to music.

From a psychological point of view, brainwashing consists of three successive phases, which can be followed in my music:

1-Dependency: 

A quiet, flowing theme is introduced by the vibraphone/glockenspiel. Soon this theme is taken up and developed further in fugato form by the sax-quartet and the orchestra.

A little later, the manipulator intervenes for the first time. Almost imperceptibly, he prepares and carries out his brainwashing.

The victim is still able to assert himself with his theme, even if it looks like his willpower is already weakening towards the end of the movement.

2-Dissonance:

In the second movement the manipulator’s superiority grows more and more and step by step he succeeds in asserting himself and finally his victim resigns. The victim’s (the first) theme has definitely disappeared.

3-Attitude Change:

Different attitude, different music.

The brainwasher has reached his goal – the victim is in the clutches of his tormentor and is now guided and driven by him – however with an open-ended conclusion.

The sky is painted in shades of blue, likely transitioning from deep indigo to soft pastel hues as the sun sets. The blue tones dominate, creating a calm and tranquil atmosphere. The landscape is untouched by human development, emphasizing the beauty of nature in its purest form. The scene feels vast and open, with no visible human presence, adding to the sense of solitude and peace. Rugged peaks or gentle slopes rise in the distance, silhouetted against the fading light of the sunset. The mountains add depth and grandeur to the scene. The air is likely crisp and cool, with a hint of stillness that often accompanies mountain sunsets. Shadows stretch long across the terrain, and the fading light casts a soft glow on the surroundings.

This, the final episode of Ways of Listening, was recorded live by Hannah Kemp-Welch at the symposium ‘Listening Together: Practices for Community-Centred Listening’ at London College of Communication in February 2025. 

Drawing on their experiences and emerging practices, electroacoustic composer Julia Schauerman, queer artist and educator Samantha Dick, and Senior Lecturer at University of Arts London Lainy Malkani reflect on the creative and ethical issues of working with the recorded voices of others. Together, they consider what a reflective and responsible creative practice looks like. 

The discussion touches upon - consent and permission, artistic interpretation of recorded voices, representation and agency of the voice subjects, and practical challenges.

Über 60 und noch kein bisschen leise – das Etablissement des Palais Club besteht bereits seit 1957. Bis 2001 brannte im Milieu am Münchner Hauptbahnhof dauerhaft das rote Licht, sei es in Form eines Nightclubs mit Zockerhöhle im Hinterzimmer, als Kleinkunstbühne mit gelegentlichen erotischen Einlagen oder schlichtweg als Cabaret mit leicht bekleideten Damen. And if Sandra is not on tour with DISCOTRIBE, you'll find her pretty often at the Munich Palais Club on the decks and pushing the mood on the floor. As reliable as a Swiss watch, she delivers the highest quality to the dancefloor and has been resident DJ for more than a decade now.
