Can a Christian be convinced, intellectually and spiritually, that Christianity is true? The apostle Paul, once an adamant critic and persecutor, became convinced of the truth of Christianity and gave three key defenses for it in Romans 1. These three defenses can give the Christian, when his or her "faith is seeking reason" (Anselm), great confidence and rest that the gospel of Jesus Christ is true!

The work of Jesus continues from the gospel of Luke to the book called the Acts of the Apostles. In Acts 1:1-11, Luke wrote about the ascension of Jesus, a sign of power and promise. The four key themes of Acts are given: the Father's sovereignty, the Spirit's empowering, the Son's witness, the Triune God's kingdom. It's easy for us to freeze up thinking we are on our own, don't have what we need, wish we were already to our destination, but Jesus promises that he continues his work in us in this era. So let's trust him and get to work!

Many people want to make an impact, do good, and be used by God. But Acts 1 comes before Acts 2. Acts 2 is the chapter of power, impact, and results, while Acts 1 is a quieter chapter of gathering, waiting, obeying, and praying. But we see in Acts 1:12-26, that God was working in people before he was going to work through them. That pattern runs throughout the Bible and the history of mankind, all the way to us. May God do his work in us first! May we open ourselves to God's powerful internal work inside of us!

Jesus launched his church in Acts 2:41-47. When the church begins, they showed the marks of baptism, attention to learning from the apostles about Jesus, and care for one another. Most of all, we read of a devotion to gather together as a loving response to God's love and grace. Jesus changes people!

Jesus gets our attention. In Acts 3, Jesus gathered attention through Peter and the healing of a lame man. How did he get your attention? He gathers attention in order to confront our sin with mercy. How does he use our lives to gather attention to his good news?

God doesn't share our fears, doesn't share our prejudices, doesn't share his throne, so we can let him sort out the bad guys. When persecution comes, we can follow Jesus. When the Holy Spirit leads us to love people that our native culture would despise, we can follow the Holy Spirit. When we encounter the corruption of others, we can check our own hearts first. God sorts it all out. In fact, we will only be sorted into heaven because God has graciously given us the free gift of salvation through faith in Jesus. Not because we weren't bad guys ourselves. Praise God for his mercy and grace!

God puts our hands back to work, even after our sin, because he has more grace than we have sin. The second half of Acts 11 continues the theme of abundant grace. He builds churches without trouble and without our help, and in doing so, he overcomes the bondage of our sin and saves us! So he doesn't need to put us to work, but he loves to. He created us in order for us to work alongside him in communion. He built the Antioch church in spite of Saul's persecution, and then moved Saul to repentance and faith in Jesus. After giving Saul time to mature, God led him to pastor the church that was started because of his persecution. That is more grace than we can imagine! He puts us to work, because he has more grace than we have sin!

There's a power encounter recorded in Acts 12, between Herod Agrippa and the Lord Jesus Christ. Guess who wins. In this chapter, we are reminded that God is running the universe and no one else. He makes his decisions according to his greater wisdom and will. He is faithful and compassionate in doing so, and so we can rest knowing he is in control and not us. We can pray not trying to control things but just to relate to him. He is the same God as he always was, and his will is unstoppable. We can put it all in his hands and risk shining in the darkness for his glory.
