There was a true sense of hope and happiness. Reliving all these memories, inspired me to write this song. As we grow older we forget how special Christmas is and we now have moments of nostalgia that we must hold onto.

Sounds of New Orleans in the song include the streetcar, the second line trumpet call, tap dancing in the French Quarter, y'heard me, where'd you go to high school, and the marching band drum line during Mardi Gras. Akon on the harmony in the background, Hydawi on original production, and a duet between two recordings of the song from the 1940s from Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong and 1960s of Ricky Nelson. Topic and Guest: June is Black Music Month or African American Music Month.  Thus today AfricaNow! presents a conversation with Dr. Maurice Jackson about the history and power of music in Washington, DC and its utility in resistance.  The conversation between historian Dr. Jackson and Dr. Josh Myers of AfricaNow! and Africa World Now Project collective centers on the book Rhythms of Resistance and Resilience: How Black Washingtonians Used Music and Sports in the Fight For Equality by Dr. Maurice Jackson.  This discussion was also featured in CapitolBop.  The discussion interweaves the musical and socio-political history of Washington with names such as Marian Anderson, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington and the Turkish Ertegun brothers, as well as the role that teachers such as John Malachi and Calvin Jones played in training the talent that continues to shape D.C.’s music.

Rhythms of Resistance and Resilience publisher’s description notes that “In the Nation's Capital, music and sports have played a central role in the lives of African Americans, often serving as a barometer of social conflict and social progress—for sports clubs and ball games, jam sessions and concerts, offered entertainment, enlightenment, and encouragement. Dr. Maurice Jackson teaches Atlantic World and African American History at Georgetown University. Professor Jackson is author of Let This Voice Be Heard, and coeditor of African Americans and the Haitian Revolution and DC Jazz (Georgetown University Press, 2018). He was the inaugural chair of the Washington, DC, Commission on African American Affairs, appointed by the mayor.

My favourite era of music is the 80s but I have a huge love for the swing jazz era. I am deeply influenced by Bobby Darin, as I regard him as one of the greatest singers, instrumentalists and full-rounded entertainers ever. I can also play a few instruments, namely piano, drums and bass.

Flamingeaux was raised in New Orleans, but the DJ was born in Miami. When the sounds of electronic dance music entered his ears, and he experienced the energy that a great house music set can bring to a crowd, he was hooked. Through his love of the music and the gathering that ensues, Flamingeaux has developed a style of Djing that gathers electronic dance music into a unique ensemble that drives a crowd crazy, keeps them wondering what's coming next, and leaves them begging for more. His turntablism focuses more on the blending of songs and transitions in between as well as the emotions evoked by simple lyrics. This new unique style of a mastermind DJ will take you by surprise, and leave you with a love for the music, the crowd, the energy, and the movement dance music has bequeathed upon the world.

My latest launch Black-Notes from Me

Black is a weird, heavy, messy record. And that’s kind of the point.

I didn’t want it to sound polished or “correct.” I wanted it to sound true. The whole thing was built from scraps—real radio broadcasts, weird animation dialogues, cartoon effects, layers of ambient sounds, and a bunch of instrumental recordings that I just sat down and played, usually once, and then kept whatever came out. A lot of it is improvised. I don’t usually go back and edit or re-record. 
If it feels honest in the moment, it stays.

I wanted to make something that sounded like the inside of the mind when you're half-asleep, overthinking, or reliving something you don’t fully understand. That’s what Black is. It’s not made to entertain. It’s not here to impress you. It’s here to reflect that weird space between memory and dream—where things feel distorted but still deeply real. Which creates the co

In general, the music I make leans toward the unorthodox and experimental. I mess with atonality, weird rhythms, broken structures—sometimes on purpose, sometimes because that’s just how it comes out. I’ve never been interested in “perfect” music. I care more about tension, confusion, things that feel a little off. That kind of discomfort is where a lot of meaning lives.

My ideas usually come from very visual places. I’ll have this scene in my head—a mood, a weird flash, a voice—and that becomes the seed. It might be triggered by a painting, a lyric, a random sound, or just something I’m feeling that I am not keen to explain in words. 
So I try to explain it in sound instead.

I believe that any 'tension' is beneficial to art and am driven by themes that are often perceived as depressive, detached, abstract, and tense - qualities that I embrace; and draw inspiration from to create..
I don’t think it’s negative. I think it’s beautiful...

If you’re listening to Black, just know: most of what you hear was made in one take, in whatever state I was in that day. It's layered, yes—but it’s also very raw. This album isn’t about perfection. It’s about presence. It’s a document of moments I didn’t want to polish away.

There are descriptions and trivia sections written for many of the pieces. Initially, many of these songs were intended to be paired with and displayed alongside stories or (mainly narrative and prose) poetry that I have written over the years.
