It's that time again and as I find myself doing an Eclectronica writeup for the 13th year I think of how lucky I am to have discovered a passion for chill and beautiful music to carry me through my days and help so many more do the same. As I think about my lucky number I am reminded that though the number 13 was considered lucky in so many cultures in the past, colonialism has re-written its significance as it has with so many powerful symbols in so many cultures throughout history. While I thought about how I was going to put together this set and what kind of vibe it would need in order to do justice to such a powerful number I thought about the perceptions of good and bad and how so many concepts of right and wrong are often skewed by societal conditioning and even changing from minute to minute within our own minds. I thought about the struggles I have personally had to endure over the last three years and the ways I had to grow as I fought to follow the path of righteousness while my own inner turmoil fed me fear, resentment, and existential dread through the lens of my subconscious biases and the very real conscious harsh reality that my loved ones and I lived through.

And with that, I present to you Eclectronica Vol. 13 - Angels & Demons. I hope they inspire you to reconcile the light and dark parts of your inner world and recognize that without witnessing and giving space to both, one cannot be truly free to accept themselves for the challenges that make us who we are.

Ojerime - Give It Up 2 Me (Court Jester's 140 Remix) [FREE DL]

These were some of the first tracks I ever released. When I released these melodic dubstep and liquid dubstep weren't really a thing and they blew up pretty quick. Over the next few years I started to see more artists making similar sounds and then we saw the evolution of chillstep, lovestep, ambient and melodic dubstep as well as liquid dubstep. Maybe they were all the same thing really. Ultimately I think they were all a sort of a response to what was available at the time - namely either paired back minimal sub heavy dubstep or the technically impressive sound design in brostep. There was a gap for more melodic, emotional, chill music in that genre and me and a bunch of others started filling it. 

Sadly I no longer have the project files but thanks to the magic of modern technology and new stem separation tools I was at least able to do a little work with what I had to retouch them and clean them up a bit. I wish I could do more, maybe one day I will do a straight rewrite of these because I really think they're good tunes, pity about the chainsaw bass in heartbeats, it was a pretty common sound back then and I hadn't quite fully detached myself from the standard dubstep tropes at the time. Oh well, it gives it a sort of 2010s charm I think. One day I will revisit this and maybe do a non-chainsaw version.

She Colours The Sky [2025 Remaster]

I wrote this with another producer, Tripwire, in 2010. One of our best tunes together in my opinion. Still love this one to this day. I was still relatively new to music production and to dubstep and future garage and I learned a lot from Tripwire and our collaborations together. You can check out his other stuff here: https://soundcloud.com/trpwr/tracks We made a few good tracks together and I always really enjoyed working with him. Haven't been in touch in a long time. I hope he's doing alright these days. I've done what I can with this. Sadly, again, I don't have the old stems or project files so I'm working with an old mp3 file. Stem separation tools make things a little easier but it's still a challenge to really bring this to a modern production standard. One of the big problems with this one was the dynamic range. I think Tripwire and I both liked it at the time, the variance between the soft parts and the future garage style chorus gave it a weird ambient atmospheric feel but on re-listening the difference was perhaps a little too extreme. I've tried to keep the dynamic range while softening the impact of the chorus parts a little.

This was one of my earlier melodic dubstep experiments. Probably the closest I got to modern 'chillstep' back in the day. Although I couldn't help but experiment with some weird panning and those standard airy vocals. I think I had been listening to a lot of Genesis and Phil Collins at the time which maybe explains some of the thicker pads and those chord choices. I've hopefully brightened this one up a little in the remaster.
