Guaglione from forthcoming album, Oznerol Era......coming out on NocturnalSol~

After having been exposed to local Italian, Neapolitan, some classical music and late 50’s leftovers that we loved like Connie Francis, Paul Anka, Neil Sedaka and the very neat and tidy orchestrations of Ray Conniff, things were quite different in the Sixties. 

Musical changes were relentlessly constant. Everybody talked about The Beatles and Stones. We began listening to The Who, Small Faces, Kinks, Troggs, Eric Burdon and the Animals etc… as well as new emerging Italian and French artists like Lucio Battisti, Equipe 84, Johnny Halliday etc… this musical revolution affected our youth dramatically.
   
Meanwhile at home, my mom would scrub the floors or wash the dishes singing older songs that clearly belonged to previous generations and, though some songs were current, they still sounded old fashioned.  Unaffected, she kept on singing them which was both beautiful and annoying.
 
I wanted to rebel against these melodies and didn’t know how. We didn’t have any instruments.  I could only fantasize about playing music and often pretended to be conducting an orchestra.
 
I really wanted to to rip these songs apart and rebuild them from scratch, an illusion that eluded me for years.

In retrospect, it wasn’t the melodies that bothered me as much just the way they were sung and the  music and the accompanying rhythms.

The song ‘Tomorrow’ came about real quick and easy. The lyrics are clear and simple and the tone of what was going in my life at the time is obvious. I had just finished arranging ‘Donut Man’ and couldn’t get it out of my head, hence the reference in the song.

This song was inspired by a friend. She’d stop by for a visit, anxious, often complaining or arguing about something and basically looking for someone to spar with. Once calm, differences settled and food when ready to leave she’d ask to borrow a shirt, scarf or something.

Here We Go!

‘Follow Instructions’ is a song written by Gustavo Santaolalla, who’s an Argentine phenomenon that still thrives today. The song was loads of fun to play live and sadly when Wet Picnic ended, it was never recorded.

The recording of this version was accidental and obviously, meant to be.
Jerry Angel (drums) had heard WP play it live so I showed Enoch, who’s a fast learner, the chords. We jammed on the rhythm as a warm up while John X was getting the sound balance. To my surprise, he recorded it.

When it was time to do the vocals I remembered most of the lyrics and Gustavo agrees, I might have made some of them up. Fun either way!

Can't Find The TV Guide

NOTE FROM ARTIST:
‘Mary Poppins’ is one of my all time favourite movies and in it there are these cute little ’Chimney Sweepers’ that dance and sing. Until Blake’s poem I had been unaware of this sad and cruel practice where orphan children, and some sold by their parents at a very young age of three, four and 5 years old to Masters that forced them to work as Chimney Sweepers. Due to their small size they would have to crawl up flues and scrub them clean. Many got hurt on the job, and others would eventually perish from health conditions and complications. This practice had been going on for a few centuries and was eventually banned sometime in the late 1800’s.
