'Tis the season for a wonderful drum & bass mix from https://soundcloud.com/deejaysteveray. This jazzy, soulful blend offers a unique foray into a world of beats both organic and urban, a mix at once fresh and nostalgic. In this edition, deejaysteveray curates and deftly mixes an arsenal of tracks that exhibit his range within the genre. 

Moving through liquid funk, jazz-infused, experimental, deep-minimal, jump-up and modern jungle, deejaysteveray pays homage to the many outposts of the drum & bass scene. Each movement of this mix offers a new perspective on drum & bass music while maintaining a common motif of super-dope, organic sounds for the streets. 

Each track on this mix was chosen with care. Like a quilt born out of fragmented fabric woven to a whole, deejaysteveray weaves together a tapestry of sound, a cozy blanket to keep us all warm throughout this winter season. 

In our final guest mix of 2024, Local Underground RDG is very pleased to host this selection of tunes from deejaysteveray, a man with a keen ear for dope tunes, and a steady hand for precise, harmonic mixing. We hope you enjoy this mix as much as we did.

Dear Mix Diary,
Life just got very busy recently. I’m working on a new project that has really inspired me; I feel like everyday I push my creative boundaries. It gives me some peace.
We just booked a deposit for an event in August! I can’t believe that 6 months ago we were just a small Soundcloud account hoping to make new friends. Now we are an incredible team, have four collectives involved, an incredible lineup and nearly 700 followers.
I thought this summer might be quiet, but it’s become the opposite. I am playing for two of my dark/minimal inspirations in June. Radio shows, guest list to events, etc. We are now running/hosting two events in August, as well as festivals. I am still not quite over that I suddenly have these amazing opportunities. But whilst it looks effortlessly easy, I don’t think people see how hard we are all working behind the scenes.
I’m excited to see Koven (and my friends) tomorrow. And for our Reload event next week. And I am REALLY excited because I’m now going to BALTER!
I feel grateful everyday.

Mix Diary Entry 4 | Jungle Mix

This week we celebrated the 30th anniversary of the monumental first Essential Mix from LTJ Bukem and MC Conrad which first aired on this very day back in July of 1995 on Radio 1. We went through nearly the entire set with no mixing, just the full length 12" vinyl versions of each track played in that mighty mix. This essential mix was and still is a masterful example of why some legendary DJ's and MC's are worthy of that status. Listening to this Essential Mix back in 1995 was both mesmerising and educational ... And you do not get the chance to say that very often! Twenty years have passed since the release of the legendary ‘Golden Girl’ by the late, great MC Conrad and Makoto. One of the most iconic tracks in Drum & Bass history, Conrad had long expressed a desire to rerecord this timeless classic – and this finally comes to fruition alongside a brand-new Makoto remix! ‘Golden Girl’ is Conrad at the peak of his powers, poetic and profound in his writing, whilst raw and evocative in his delivery. The fresh vocals were recorded in one take during a sunlit studio session in 2019, where he sounds even deeper than before, adding even more emotional weight to an already mesmeric performance.

Makoto’s reconstruction is subtle but suave, as the original hallmarks are boosted with a modern twist; you’ll still groove to those amen loops, bounce to the bass and fall in love all over again with those melodic keys and strings! This 2025 revising rekindles the bliss of its precursor, as it flickers with nostalgic joy whilst capturing the hearts of new audiences. Coupled with this is a brand-new Makoto remix, an instantly infectious continuation of the song’s heritage. It is a dazzling duo of tracks that tip a joyous nod of the head towards a pioneer, as the legacy of Conrad and his music lives on forever.

A fresh and unique, SnowFest Festival is the greatest music and winter sports festival in Szczyrk [Poland]. During one weekend a year, you can experience skiing and snowboarding at a daytime and music from national and world class musicians, DJs and bands at night.

Vincent became interested in mixing/DJing back in the 80s when he first heard a street sounds hip hop electro album and wondered how they managed to join the individual tracks up so seamlessly.

Having collected vinyl his whole life he bought a mixer in 1989 (no easy thing in Cornwall back then) and started trying to beat match on his father’s turntables.

Vincent got his own Technics 1210s mk2 in the early 90s and after some practice, he was soon playing house, hardcore and techno at parties across the Southwest under the name of DJ Cutting Edge.

Jungle and Drum and Bass seemed to be the next step. After listening to LTJ Bukem’s first essential mix in 1995 he really started to follow the Intelligent Drum and Bass sound.

Today, and now a DMC competitor and tutor, Vincent can be found playing Liquid and Liquid Funk tunes, delighting crowds across the Southwest with some nice a-men break business and sweet turntablism out of love for the old school. From time to time he can be found dropping a Jungle set somewhere in Cornwall as well performing at various House and Hip Hop events.
