we watched the shells

This wasn't intended to be a melancholy song. Yet, somehow it couldn't avoid being exactly that. The waves throughout were recorded at the Oregon beach in the photo. My daughter got an instax camera before this trip, and I used it to catch this moment of her up on a dune looking at the sunset. As she sat there, I felt the weight of knowing. Of how much she has come to know of life, and how much I've come to know that parenting is the process of continually letting go and saying a long goodbye to their childhood.
