Bad Gods: Haiti is a ground-level memoir of duty under pressure. In January 2010, David Burnell landed in Port-au-Prince as Chief of Security for the Utah Hospital Task Force—120 doctors, nurses, and volunteers dropped into chaos. With a five-man security element and the help of the 82nd Airborne, he built perimeters out of trucks, moved clinics through hostile streets, and called hard exits when daylight died.

This is the work as it really happens: food drops that tilt toward riot, a bus “explosion” that became a drill, camp sickness that knocked healers off their feet, and the quiet routine of rules that save lives—never alone, hide real cash, break contact early, at dusk security calls it. Threaded through it all is the search for a kidnapped boy, Gardy Mardy, pushed into Haiti’s hills and alleys where law had broken.

Burnell keeps the language simple and the tone honest. There’s some dry humor (yes, a “Fixer” and a few Jack-Bauer-for-TV moments), but the center stays steady: protect people, get them home, and live with the choices. Faith shows up in a truck-bed sacrament and field blessings—not a sermon, just the spine he leaned on.

Recounting her mothers’ history—from the passions and beliefs they shared to the political divisions over sexual identity that ultimately split them apart—Pernille Ipsen’s chronicle of gender, sexuality, and feminism as it was constructed, contested, and lived reminds us that new worlds are always possible. Pernille Ipsen is author of My Seven Mothers: Making a Family in the Danish Women's Movement and professor of gender and women’s studies and history at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Ipsen is a historian of gender, women, feminism, race and colonialism in Scandinavia and the larger Atlantic world.

Adriane Lentz-Smith is associate professor of history, African American studies, and gender, sexuality, and feminist studies at Duke University. Lentz-Smith is author of Freedom Struggles: African Americans and World War I.

Becoming the first Black anything in environments rife with racism is far from easy, but trailblazing journalist and actress JAYNE KENNEDY has done it not just once but three separate times. Kennedy made history as the first Black Miss Ohio in 1970, the first Black woman to anchor NFL Today in the 1970s and the first woman of any race to host Greatest Sports Legends in the 1980s. Not to mention her award-winning acting career rubbing elbows with other stars like Sammy Davis Jr. and her status as an icon of Black beauty and excellence. 

The newly crowned NABJ Lifetime Achievement Award winner shares her remarkable story in her recently released memoir "Plain Jayne". In it, she takes back her narrative and legacy after a sex tape scandal led her into seclusion for years. 

In an inspiring conversation with the Sidebar’s KIZZY COX, Kennedy discusses her life, lessons and the steps she took on her way back into the well-deserved spotlight.

Jayne Kennedy Reclaims Her Narrative

David Singer is an internationally acclaimed clarinetist whose career has included two
performances at the White House and more than 150 appearances in Carnegie Hall.
Joseph Horowitz in The New York Times wrote about David Singer, “To describe his
playing would be to enumerate a catalogue of virtues.”

Mr. Singer’s recording of the Aaron Copland Clarinet Concerto was praised by
Lawrence A. Johnson from Gramophone Magazine in the UK as “one of the finest
accounts around,” and his performances have been featured on the BBC and on Sirius
XM as a principal performer of the Grammy Award-winning Orpheus Chamber
Orchestra, NYC.

Professor Singer taught as a guest teacher at both the Yale and Princeton Schools of
Music as well as at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern
California, and is Emeritus Professor of Clarinet/Coordinator of Chamber Music at
Montclair State University, NJ. He continues to coach young musicians across Southern
California and performs with the Singer Chamber Players and the Channel Islands
Chamber Orchestra.

Memoir of a Reluctant Beauty Queen

For fans of Little Miss Sunshine and Secrets of Miss America, this memoir from a national award-winning author reveals the reality of being the first Guyrex Girl in the 1970s. Beauty pageant stories have never been this raw, this real.

Growing up in West Texas, Jane Little Botkin didn't have designs on becoming a beauty queen. But not long after joining a pageant on a whim in college, she became the first protégé of El Paso's Richard Guy and Rex Holt, known as the "Kings of Beauty"—just as the 1970's counterculture movement began to take off.

A pink, rose-covered gown—a Guyrex creation—symbolizes the fairy tale life that young women in Jane's time imagined beauty queens had. Its near destruction exposes reality: the author's failed relationship with her mother, and her parents' failed relationship with one another. Weaving these narrative threads together is the Wild West notion that anything is possible, especially do-overs.

The Pink Dress awakens nostalgia for the 1960s and 1970s, the era's conflicts and growth pains. A common expectation that women went to college to get "MRS" degrees—to find a husband and become a stay-at-home wife and mother—often prevailed. How does one swim upstream against this notion among feminist voices that protest "If You Want Meat, Go to a Butcher!" at beauty pageants, two flamboyant showmen, and a developing awareness of self? Torn between women's traditional roles and what women could be, Guyrex Girls evolved, as did the author.

"Integrale" raccoglie 18 tracce in totale: 14 brani originali che spaziano tra elettronica e rap sperimentale, e 4 tracce extra che offrono uno sguardo più personale attraverso messaggi e sneak peeks dell'autore.

L'album è il risultato di un percorso artistico che Gabriele Mei ha intrapreso negli anni '90 sotto il nome di Il Genio, ma che ha continuato con il suo nome su YouTube, come Gabriele Mei LIVES o a homeless. La musica di Mei è intrisa di una cruda autenticità che riflette le sue lotte interne e il suo costante confronto con la realtà, sempre sfidando le convenzioni e cercando di dar voce alla sua visione del mondo.

Tra i suoi brani più noti, come "Conto solo io" e "Lasciami Amare", l'artista affronta temi di solitudine, alienazione e resilienza.
