𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐋𝐄 [ 유랑 Wander ] 𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐍𝐎𝐖


21세기에 들어서면서 난립했던 수많은 개러지 펑크, 포스트 펑크 밴드들은 직선적이고 자글자글한 드라이브 사운드로 청자들을 매료시켰다. 20세기를 풍미한 스타디움 록에서 벗어나, 스케일은 작아졌지만 조금 더 가까운 곳에서 날것의 거친 사운드로 강한 에너지를 보여주며 긴장감을 선사했다. 2012년 느닷없이 등장한 Mac DeMarco의 등장은 여러모로 충격적이었다. 스스로 ‘Jizz Jazz’라 칭한 특유의 사운드는 긴장감은커녕 강한 에너지 같은 건 없었고, 오롯이 간결하게 여유롭고 느긋했다. 코러스와 페이저 같은 모듈레이션류의 이팩터를 활용한 일렁이는 듯한 기타사운드는 그 여유로움에 몽환적인 무드를 한껏 자아냈다. 그의 등장은 인디록의 패러다임을 바꾼 큰 사건이었다. 현재 인디 음악의 주류가 된 수많은 드림팝, 베드룸 팝, 슈게이징 밴드들의 활약은 그의 영향 아래 있다고 보는 것이 합당할 것이다. 날것의 에너지는 더 이상 인디록을 설명하지 못한다. 2025년 현재의 인디록은 로-파이lofi 감성 아래 펼쳐지는 무드와 공간감이 주는 특유의 느긋함이다. 

대구에서 서울로 상경한 원림(기타)과 장도원(베이스)이 밴드 쟁그랑Jengrang 출신의 Hwang(보컬)과 박영수(드럼)를 만나 2023년 결성된 밴드 리치리치의 이번 싱글 [유랑]은 이러한 현재 인디록의 경향을 따른다. 제목 그대로 유랑하는 듯 여유롭고, 무엇 하나 억지스러운 부분 없이 물 흐르듯 자연스럽다. Mac DeMarco를 떠올리게 하는 트랜디한 기타 사운드는 한 마디, 한 단어로 형용하지 못할 오묘한 무드를 만들고, 강한 에너지로 공간을 가득 채우는 것이 아닌, 자연스러운 감정을 간결한 리듬 위에 슬며시 던진다. 일상의 내밀한 감정을 담은 노랫말과 Hwang의 보컬은 전혀 과하지 않다. 위로는 변화를 위한 적극적인 행위가 아닌 경청을 통한 공감에서 시작된다. 리치리치의 적당한 가벼움과 Hwang이 담담하게 전하는 감정선은 공감을 끌어내는 데 부족함이 없다. 

이번 싱글 [유랑]이 전하는 허무함은 MZ세대의 허무주의Nihilism와 맞닿아있다. 강한 에너지와 요란함은 그 자체로 강한 자기주장과 변화에 대한 욕구를 전제한다. 수많은 인디록, 드림팝 음악들의 여유와 느슨함은 큰 소리의 필요성조차 느끼지 못하는, 일종의 체념적 인식을 대변한다. 이러한 경향은 가사에서 더 도드라지는데, ‘저항’, ‘변혁’ 등과 같은 거대 서사가 아닌, 철저하게 사적이고 내밀한 감정과 미시적 서사에 집중한다. 시끄럽게 떠든다 한들 빈부격차, 기후위기 따위의 커다란 문제들이 해결될 리 없고, 미래는 불확실하고, 어떠한 저항도 반항도 의미가 없으니 남는 건 ‘지금, 여기 서 있는 나’뿐이다. “막이 내려진 뒤 찾아오는 허무함”은 그저 무대가 끝났기 때문에 찾아오는 것이 아니다. 무대를 빛내는 혹은 무대를 지켜보는 ‘타인’이 사라진 공백에서 비롯된다. 허무주의자에게 ‘타인’은 그저 의미 없는 관계, 물질적 존재에 불과하다. 당연히 모든 소통은 피상적이고 무의미하다. 

결국엔 “밤은 깊어지고 멍하니 그 길을 바라보며” “불현듯 찾아온 공허함”을 느끼는 그 순간만이 남는다. “사로잡혀” 도리어 “잃어버린 것들”을 떠올리며 “남겨진 건 지저분한 유리창”이라는 현실을, 무엇 하나 마음먹은 대로 해낼 수 없는 무기력을, 나의 의미를 확인해 줄 타인조차도 무의미하다는 명제를 인정하는 건 말처럼 쉽지 않다. 밴드 리치리치의 [유랑]을 비롯한, 현재의 인디 음악들은 무의미로 가득한 세상 속, 작은 일상 안에 남겨진 ‘나에게 의미 있는 것들’을 되찾아준다. 지금 내 앞에 놓인 따뜻한 차 한 잔이, 소중한 누군가의 미소가 삶에 의미를 부여할지도 모른다. 우리가 손에 쥔 건 ‘지금, 여기 이 순간’이 전부라는 간단명료한 사실을 받아들이는 것이야말로 서로에 대한 공감이며 서로를 위한 위로일지도 모른다.
