News doesn't wait for prime-time TV or tomorrow's paper anymore. The largest longitudinal study reveals that Twitter breaks 59% of major news stories before traditional media catches up. This has altered the map of information consumption completely.

Twitter's evolution goes beyond social networking since Elon Musk bought it and rebranded it to X. People now use Twitter's search as their go-to live news engine. They verify breaking stories and follow events as they happen. This radical alteration challenges mainstream media's role as the trusted source of truth.

My breakdown shows how Twitter reshapes the news scene. We'll get into its verification methods and what this means for future information sharing. The examples where Twitter beats traditional media to the punch are the foundations of the analysis. This matters equally to news readers and creators.x

ZOOMERS 2 BOOMERS: The News from ZOOMER 2 BOOMER

Control of information is a vital weapon of the ruling class in its war on the people. Critical media literacy is more important now than it has ever been. For the past year we’ve been drowning in imbalanced coverage of the war on Gaza. (How many times did mainstream news outlets use the word ‘genocide’?) It’s just one example – and it’s an outrage.

Steve’s guest is Shealeigh Voitl, Project Censored’s digital and print editor. They discuss the media’s role in shaping public perception and delve into the systemic disinformation propagated by corporate and academic institutions. While sensational inconsequential stories dominate the headlines, the voices and experiences of the working class and the marginalized are silenced.

Steve and Shealeigh look at the power dynamics inherent in media ownership, reinforcing inequality and promoting working class subjugation. Passive news consumption is the equivalent of unilateral disarmament.

Shealeigh Voitl is the digital and print editor at Project Censored. She first began her research with the Project at North Central College alongside Steve Macek, co-authoring the Déjá Vu News chapter in the State of the Free Press 2022 and 2023 yearbooks, and the Top 25 chapter in SFP 2023. In addition to her editorial contributions to the yearbook series and work with the Campus Affiliates Program, Shealeigh helped develop the State of the Free Press 2024 teaching guide and the Project’s “Critical Media Literacy in Action” social media series. Her writing has also been featured in Truthout, The Progressive, and Ms. Magazine.

Fatal Distraction with Shealeigh Voitl

When Russia began their "special military operation" in Ukraine in 2021, we instantaneously heard a unison chorus declare this was an "unprovoked" attack on a free democratic ally. Unsurprisingly, the usual pro-war voices on both sides (Lyndsey Graham, Chris Murphy), planted the flag for the fight. But left-leaning Americans, as well, obediently pitched "Stand With Ukraine" lawn signs in their yards, and stuck Ukraine flag pins, bumper stickers and social media memes, declaring their support of a place most may not have been able to point to on a world map.

For most of us, the 2020 impeachment trial of Donald Trump was the first time we had heard anything related to the relatively small Eastern European country. The president stood accused of withholding urgent weapons shipments to Ukraine in exchange for the Ukraine president, Zelensky, investigating Joe Biden and his family's business dealings in the historically corrupt sovereignty. Few questioned why we needed to send weapons to Ukraine at that moment, when President Obama denied the shipment of lethal weapons to Ukraine for his entire presidency.

The ongoing war in the eastern part of Ukraine, beginning in 2014, was seldom mentioned in mainstream news in the US. When it was, it was referred to as internal skirmishes between Ukraine and "Russian-backed separatists." Little context was given to the fact that the entire Eastern part of Ukraine, geographically called the Donbass region, was populated by  Russian-speakers, who identified more with what they viewed as their Russian motherland to their East, than the increasingly-westernized Europeans in Kiev. In all elections held in Ukraine, the Donbass oblasts (states) solidly voted for candidates who preferred cohesion with Russia over NATO and the US. 

(For sake of brevity, I cannot get into the long struggle between these people who believed they were fighting for their right to hold onto their Russian heritage, language, and religion, and the nationalists in Kiev seeking to strip them of their traditions. Nor can I get into the even longer history of provocations against Russia, leading up to the 2021 invasion, the so-called start of the war. All of this is well-documented.)

Because the US media pitted Trump against the government of Ukraine in the narrative surrounding the first impeachment, large swaths of Americans began holding up Ukraine as a bulwark against Trump.  For the previous three years, allegations by Democrats that Trump's campaign had colluded with the other side, Russia, were relentlessly investigated and litigated in the US press. The intrepid special investigator into Russian collusion, Robert Mueller, who Democrats were convinced was going to lead Trump to prison in handcuffs, had found insufficient evidence of collusion less than a year before. But the die-hards continued to insist on Trump's guilt.

The rendering of Trump, standing in between Ukraine's struggle, in favor of the Russian aggressor, was therefore, firmly etched in America's psyche, and little push was needed for so many to "Stand With Ukraine."  

No one knows what is going to happen in the process of ongoing negotiations. Trump wants to be seen as the peace president, while the other side insists he is an agent of mayhem. For 3 years, the Biden administration and NATO countries escalated the chaos of war and undermined all negotiations between the warring parties. As the outcome is looking worse for Ukraine daily, the tale that Trump is to blame for Ukraine's potential loss will likely be on Trump's political enemies' best-seller list for many seasons to come.

How the US public's perception of the Ukraine war was manipulated, vis-a-vis Trump
