A flightless sea bird that became extinct in the mid-19th century. Early European explorers used it as a convenient food source or as fishing bait, and the bird's down was also in high demand in Europe, factors that largely eliminated the European populations by the mid-16th century. On 3 June 1844, the last two confirmed specimens were killed on Eldey, off the coast of Iceland. A report of one individual in 1852 is considered by some to be the last sighting of a member of the species.

An extinct group of flightless birds formerly endemic to New Zealand. The largest species reached about 3.6 metres (12 ft) in height with neck outstretched, and weighed about 230 kilograms (510 lb) while the smallest was around the size of a turkey. Estimates of the moa population when Polynesians settled New Zealand circa 1300 vary between 58,000 and approximately 2.5 million. Extinction occurred within 100 years of human settlement, primarily due to overhunting.
