Crate-digging is fun! This is a mix I've done, originally planned for, uh, February, where I've made a mix of UK techno (loosely defined), which covers all angles, which means that the mix starts off pretty stripped-down and minimal, then goes through some chunky modern acid house, then into some bass-heavy dub and jungle influenced techno that could only come from the UK, some more loopy hardgroove-style stuff, then steadily more banging and intense, right up to some classic London acid techno, modern industrial techno from Perc and, finally, my own extremely uncompromising track ‘Crossbones’!

As the Summer draws in, the music keeps flowing here at WE FORFEIT. For June, we have a label we love. We have @gatedrecordings. Founded in 2019 by Dj @node and Jadey Smith, Gated has become an imprint of serious intent in the world of electronic music. 

This month, we’ve been lucky enough to speak with one the bosses of Gated, Node, about the imprint and what makes him tick. In a conversation that reveals all, and then some, we go back through the Gated catalogue and pick out some personal favourties from artists like Sound Synthesis, The Jaffa Kid and Dip Shim

In the second hour, Node takes the helm with a mix of serious proportions with gems from acid, breakbeat, electro and loads more. Expect unreleased material as well as tracks from Acidulant, Cityman Productions,  and Wave Function.

There & Back 005: May, Bass Explorations 1996 - 2023

In the neon haze of the city streets, Ŧ∆βʊ loomed like an ancient spirit, as if summoned by the very shadows that clung to the city’s underbelly. His silhouette stood stark against the kaleidoscope of lights, a figure rendered both ethereal and defiant by the glow that surged through the velvet darkness. He bore himself with the quiet, brutal dignity of one who had endured, his broad shoulders and scarred frame a testament to the unyielding resilience that had been hewn from years of secrets—secrets too monstrous for the world above to bear.

PHA₦TA5IA gleamed in the night, decadent and unblemished, a paradise of lights and music that drifted down to the depths below. Yet below, in the unlit corridors of ||ND3RGR0||ND, Ŧ∆βʊ had fought battles that would break even the hardest men. He’d lingered in the damp silence, a shadow among shadows, carved by betrayals so deeply rooted that they had seeped into his bones, leaving him no choice but to endure, to sharpen his senses against every unlit alley, every whisper of treachery.

To the Phantasians above, he was a haunting presence—a reminder of every ugly truth they had chosen to bury. They dismissed him, shunned him, their gazes sliding over him as if refusing to acknowledge the shape he cast against their pristine world. But he was not a man to be dismissed so easily. In him burned a quiet, savage hunger that had been smothered too long, a fury not yet unleashed but honed to a razor’s edge.

The Subterrans saw him as an enigma, a figure too complex for their dark world—a man who, despite everything, harbored dreams that glimmered like fractured glass in the dim light. He moved among them, a solitary storm contained by the promise of vengeance, biding his time in the cracks of the city, a creature bound to his own darkness yet never consumed by it.

Ŧ∆βʊ did not tread lightly on the fringes of this world. No, he embraced its treacherous allure, wading deeper into the labyrinth with each passing night, feeding off the city’s pulse as if drawing strength from its relentless heartbeat. He craved not forgiveness but reckoning, a settling of the scales for every lie he had swallowed, for every wound that scarred his soul. In the seductive flicker of lights, he moved like a gathering storm, a force biding its time, destined to erupt and sweep away the delicate facades above.

And so, in that moment, as the city shimmered around him, he was more than a man. He was a shadow cast upon the fragile beauty of PHA₦TA5IA, a reckoning that lay dormant in the depths, a surge of darkness that would one day rise—unforgiving, unyielding, and inevitable.

One of the best jungle / drum n' bass labels of the last decade has been Hertfordshire's @repertoiresound. I love how fearlessly label bosses @drumtrip and Ben Repertoire have curated the label's sound, putting out everything from murky halfstep to powerful rollers to lush atmospherics to full-scale face-ripping tearouts. Something for all the family! This mix is my tribute to their great work, pulling together 30 different tracks from across their catalog. So many good tunes!
