Mary Jacobsen talks with John Sheff, a NASA Solar System Ambassador, about astrobiology, the interdisciplinary scientific search for extraterrestrial life, which seeks to understand how life arose and evolved on Earth and what makes a planet habitable.
          Sheff is an amateur astronomer and “space buff” who operates the observatory telescope during public nights at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge.
The quest for extraterrestrial life has been advanced by two recent discoveries. First, life forms have been found in extremely harsh environments on Earth, such as hydrothermal vents in the ocean floor.  
Second, numerous extrasolar planets have been discovered orbiting around stars other than our sun. To date, NASA has confirmed more than 5,000 “exoplanets.” (For more information, visit exoplanets.nasa.gov.)
          Imagining extraterrestrial life forms has in the past been the province of science fiction writers, but these two discoveries have supplied astrobiologists with a scientific basis for speculating about how conditions on other planets would determine the physiological possibilities of a reality-based “E.T.”

Morning Show with Mary Jacobsen 2023-01-12 John Sheff NASA Solar System Ambassador

Mary Jacobsen talks with Kurt Braddock, Assistant Professor of Public Communications at American University. Braddock is the author of “Weaponized Words: the Strategic Role of Persuasion in Violent Radicalization and Counter-radicalization,” published by Cambridge University Press in 2020.
          Braddock explains “stochastic terror,” a term that is showing up with growing frequency in news and commentary in reference to political, antisemitic, or racially motivated acts of violence such as the assault on Paul Pelosi.
          Stochastic is a term related to statistics, referring to events that are likely to occur, but do so at random. As Braddock says, “think of sitting on your front porch watching dark storm clouds roll into your neighborhood. You can be pretty sure lightning is going to strike soon, but you can’t know exactly when or where.”
Stochastic terror refers to violent acts that are not directly ordered, but are almost certain to happen in response to a volume of dehumanizing and inflammatory, mass mediated rhetoric about a person or group that implicitly advocates for or justifies violence.
“When you’re reaching millions of people” with such messages, Braddock says, “you approach near certainty” that someone will respond to incendiary rhetoric with violence.
Although such indirect incitement is protected free speech, Braddock believes that public education about the strategy and hazards of stochastic terror can give us a means of “attitudinal inoculation” against calls to political violence. By discerning when inflammatory rhetoric from leaders is being used as a “political communication tool,” we can “demand greater responsibility from our elected leaders.”

Morning Show with Mary Jacobsen 2023-01-26 Kurt Braddock

West Newbury resident Jesse Kalfel will visit the show this week to discuss the documentary, “Dancing On a Volcano,” which tells the fascinating story of his mother’s work with the French resistance during World War II and her eventual escape from Nazi-occupied Europe.

Sponsored by the Newburyport Human Rights Commission and Congregation Ahavas Achim in recognition of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the film will be shown on January 26th at 6:30 PM at Nock Middle School on Low Street.

At the beginning of World War II, Kalfel’s mother, Nadja Hammerman, worked in Paris as a fashion illustrator. Other family members had faced imprisonment in Austria, and more than 50 of her relatives were sent to death camps.

A “woman of action and a survivor,” as Kalfel describes her, Hammerman helped family members escape to Trinidad with the help of a Chilean diplomat based in Paris, Armando Merino, with whom she became romantically involved.

Together, Hammerman and Merino were able to help many endangered people to acquire identity papers and visas so they could flee to Chile. Eventually, it became too dangerous for Hammerman to remain in Paris, and she fled France for New York, where she was able to resume her career and became a renowned fashion illustrator. She died in 2017 at the age of 105.

As Kalfel says, the film “speaks to the finest of human qualities in the darkest of times.” There will be a Q&A session with Kalfel at the end of the screening.

In today's episode of the Morning Show our host, Mary Jacobsen, speaks with award-winning novelist Erica Ferencik about “Girl in Ice,” which was named a 2022 New York Times Editors’ Choice and a Los Angeles Times Best Crime Novel of Winter 2022, among numerous other honors it received.
“Girl in Ice” has been described by the New York Times as “hauntingly beautiful.” The Wall Street Journal called it a “psychological suspense novel, a linguistic thriller and a scientific puzzle.”
Set in the Arctic Circle, the plot follows Val, a “brilliant linguist struggling to understand the apparent suicide of her twin brother.” That pursuit leads her to “venture hundreds of miles north to try to communicate with a young girl who has been thawed from the ice alive.”
Ferencik talks about her research on the Artic setting and the people of Greenland, her book’s theme of climate change, and how other languages draw us into different ways of thinking, as when, for example, Val reveals that the word for “climate change” in Inuktun, a language of northern Greenland, translates to “a friend acting strangely.”

On this week's episode, Mary Jacobsen talks with James Kimmel, Jr. about the psychology of grievance and revenge. Kimmel is lecturer in psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine and co-director of the Yale Collaborative for Motive Control Studies.
Kimmel talks about the role of grievances and retaliation in violent crime, including studies that reveal that “your brain on grievance looks a lot like your brain on drugs.” Harboring a grievance – a perceived wrong or injustice, either real or imagined, says Kimmel – “activates the same neural reward circuitry as narcotics.”
Just as people become addicted to drugs or gambling, people may become addicted to seeking retribution on perceived enemies, or as Kimmel calls it, “revenge addiction.” Kimmel also talks about how cultivation of grievances has become a contagious and dangerous political tool, notably in the wake of the Big Lie and the Jan. 6th insurrection.
“Revenge-seeking” also contributes to domestic violence, youth violence and bullying, police brutality, and terrorism.
According to Kimmel, it’s critical to “increase public education, from school age through adulthood, about healthy ways to process feelings of hurt and humiliation.”
Kimmel will explain “motive control” treatment strategies being piloted successfully at the Yale Collaborative as a means of disrupting grievance addiction and disarming the craving for retaliation.

On this episode, Mary Jacobsen speaks with Kimberly Zieselman about her book, XOXY, an award-winning memoir of her personal and professional intersex journey.
          Zieselman is an intersex woman, lawyer and human rights advocate. She served as the executive director of interACT: Advocates for Intersex Youth. In 2022 the State Dept. appointed her Senior Advisor to the Special Envoy for LGBTQI+ Human Rights.
          Zieselman explains the meaning of intersex, which refers to someone born with sex characteristics (chromosomes, reproductive organs or genitalia) that don't line up with typical definitions of either a "male" or "female" body. Nearly 2% of the world’s population are born intersex, about the same number of people who have green eyes.
          Zieselman will correct common misconceptions of what it means to be intersex, and will describe how binary notions of gender and sex embedded in U.S. health care have contributed to life-long harms of intersex persons, including surgical interventions performed on infants.

Jones is a meditation instructor at North Shore Insight Meditation Center, and a workshop leader exploring the intersection of Buddhist and Christian meditation traditions.
The co-hosts discuss their plans for the show, as well as their own spiritual journeys.

In this episode, Mary Jacobsen speaks with author, historian, professor and pilot Katherine Sharp Landdeck about her book, “The Women with Silver Wings: The Inspiring True Story of the Women Airforce Service Pilots of WWII.”
Landdeck’s book will be featured at the upcoming Newburyport Literary Festival, which will take place April 28th -30th at venues throughout the city on the 29th and online via Zoom on the 30th.
According to Landdeck, an associate professor of history at Texas Woman’s University, between 1942 – 1944, more than 1,100 WASP’s ferried military planes from factories to points of embarkation, transporting 12,000 planes more than 60 million miles. They also flight-tested planes and towed targets behind aircraft to help train male gunners, who fired at them with live ammunition.
As one reviewer wrote, Landdeck “has written a soaring tale in which, at long last, these daring WWII pilots gain the credit they deserve. You will be riveted and inspired by their story.”
Landdeck’s session will take place on April 30th at noon via Zoom, and is titled “Two Ways to Tell a Story: Two Authors’ Take on the Women Airforce Service Pilots of WWII.” Landdeck will converse with novelist Alena Dillon, whose novel, “Eyes Turned Skyward,” features a modern-day WASP and her quest to be recognized for her service.

Crochiere discusses how she generated the idea for a novel about a single mother forced to chase her Elvis-obsessed mother and pink-haired teenaged daughter on a road trip to Memphis, in an effort to stop them from exposing a long-held family secret.

For 13 years, Crochiere wrote a humor column for two Massachusetts newspapers, which were published as a book titled ”The Mother Load,” a finalist for Foreword Reviews’ Book of the Year in humor and the Independent Publishers of New England 2014 Book Award. Hart talks about the Beatles’ enduring impact on rock and roll music, on the recording industry, on creating “youth culture,” and their role as creators of enduring “anthems” of peace.

Mary Jacobsen speaks with Lisa Dube, LICSW, about fears and misconceptions that are fueling a growing number of legislative bans on gender affirmative care for transgender youth in numerous “red” states across the U.S.

Dube’s private practice, Merrimack River Wellness, focuses on the unique therapeutic needs of transgender youth, adults, and their families. Among the greatest fears and misconceptions driving the bans, reports Dube, is that children under 18 receive surgery, but as Dube emphasizes, this does not happen.

Dube discusses how such bans are impacting the safety and access to care of youths, families, and providers, not only in states where the legislation has passed or is pending, but also in states such as Massachusetts, where gender affirming care is legal, but providers nonetheless receive threats. 

Dube talks about the critical importance of family support for transgender youth, as well as ways everyone in a community can become an ally.

As discouraging as the bans and the bias have been, Dube finds hope in her belief that “love will win in the end.”

A highlight of the Festival will be composer-in-residence Jon Deak’s setting for string quartet and soprano of Newburyport resident and renowned poet Rhina Espaillat’s work, “The Jury.” This final concert of Festival will take place on Sunday, August 13th at St. Paul’s Church on High Street, and will be offered on a Pay-What-You-Can basis.

Mary Jacobsen speaks with Vera Danchenko-Stern, pianist and founder of the Russian Chamber Art Society (RCAS), about "A Tribute to Rachmaninov: A Celebration of the 150th Anniversary of His Birth.”

The tribute concert will take place on September 10th at St. Paul’s Church, 166 High Street in Newburyport, featuring Danchenko-Stern on piano and lyric tenor Fanyong Du presenting the composer’s lesser known art songs, known as romances.

The RCAS is a non-profit organization dedicated to presenting concerts of Russian vocal works, including opera and art songs. Danchenko-Stern describes Rachmaninov’s vocal compositions as “some of the most beloved and powerful in the repertoire, and the RCAS looks forward to bringing them to the Newburyport audience.”

Danchenko-Stern explains how Rachmaninov serves as a “bridge” between American and Russian music and culture. The composer arrived in America after the Russian Revolution in 1918, and became a naturalized U.S. citizen shortly before his death in Beverly Hills in 1942.

Mary Jacobsen speaks with distinguished music educator and piano teacher Penny Lazarus, whose students incorporate a thematic project into their studies each year, about their most recent project studying and performing music by American Indigenous composers.

Lazarus talks about the tremendous diversity of Native American composers, and the many traditions they draw upon in their compositions. She identifies common misconceptions about the styles of music and instruments utilized by the composers, clarifying that it ranges far beyond “flutes and drums.”

Lazarus and her students performed a recital of Native American composers this past June at St. Paul’s Church. She shows video clips of their renditions of works by some of the composers they studied, including Charles Shadle, Connor Chee, Jerod Tate, and Arielle Hines-Lunn.

Student performers include Grady as well as Paz Rivas, Sam Lemoine, and Levi Irose.

Lazarus also discusses the common ethos shared by the diverse Native American compositions that she and her students studied, defining it as one of “respect for the earth and nature,” and musically representing the “idea that time can stand still long enough to be fully present in the moment.”

Mary Jacobsen speaks with history teacher Anthony Guerriero about the legacy of bestselling author and award-winning American historian David McCullough, who died in 2022 at the age of 89 at his home in Hingham, MA.

A favorite and frequent guest on the show, Anthony in the past has shone a light on the achievements, motives, and minds of prominent figures ranging from Thomas Jefferson and Ted Williams to WWII spy Mo Berg.

This time, he illuminates what sets McCullough’s work apart from other historians, and will explore the impact of his research and writing on figures ranging from John Adams and Harry Truman to the Wright Brothers and Theodore Roosevelt, among many others.

McCullough was twice awarded both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. As his New York Times obituary put it, “His research was deep, his writing was lively, and his narrator’s voice in documentary films was familiar to millions.”
