Legendary Saxophonist Daniel Carter and the Telepathic Band Celebrate Their Imaginative Tradition and Daring Sound with the Moody New Release, ‘Telepathic Mysteries, Vol. 2’

The Telepathic Mysteries, Vol. 2 is the second volume from the Telepathic Mysteries recording session, documented at Sear Sound, in NYC in 2019. 

Named after the sort of improvisational style that can only be accomplished after a decade or two of collaboration, The Telepathic Band is made up of long-time friends and collaborators Daniel Carter, Patrick Holmes, Matthew Putman, Hilliard Greene, and Federico Ughi. With Daniel, Federico and Matthew having played together since 2009 and Federico and Daniel collaborating since 2001, they have developed their own language and together play extemporaneously and strategically in increasingly genre-defying projects. 

This most recent album is classic Telepathic Band approach, celebrating their imaginative tradition and daring sound while edging towards a dissonant tension and gentle reprieve that signals a new era in their sound. Possibly their darkest project yet, the extended tracks enter a more mysterious realm, while drawing from new classical and orchestral influences particularly reminiscent of Impressionistic composition. Matthew Putman plays Debussy-esque melodies on piano and psychedelic dub keyboards. Patrick Holmes delivers eerie, lyrical clarinet solos, and Hilliard Greene offers his own harmonies on bass. Federico Ughi again challenges the assumed role of a percussionist, diverging from steady rhythms, to offer uniquely spontaneous and open drumming, while Daniel Carter returns to his perennial role as a multi-instrumental and chamber-focused informal facilitator, easing the spaces in between features and lending an added measure of coherence between musicians.

As multi-instrumentalists and deeply imaginative artists, the group offers haunting and impressive performances imbued with a sense of mysticism, as part of a larger journey towards an indecipherable destination. The Telepatic Band, or smaller versions of the ensemble, are the house band for the Forward Festival, live music events organized in Brooklyn New York, Tangier (Morocco), and Canale Monterano (Italy) on a regular basis. 

Given the improvisational nature of the music, each song is an inimitable one-off, live show.

Daniel Carter and Telepathic Band: 'Mayaland' from 'Telepathic Mysteries, Vol. 2'

After performing and recording together for over fifteen years as members of various bands, musical genius Daniel Carter, pianist Matthew Putman, and drummer Federico Ughi have come together as a trio for the first time.  Whether you recognize them individually, as the core team at 577 Records, or from their involvement in ensembles like the legendary quintet Telepathic Band (which released seven spectacular albums of its own), you’ve never heard them like you will in their debut album, Stream of a Dream.

Their premiere release is a live recording from their March 2024 performance at Brooklyn’s New York Forward Festival.  This music-focused arts initiative was established in 2015 and is now bringing its roster to Canale Monterano, Italy and Tangier, Morocco.  Always held in eccentric locations, these events flawlessly (and intentionally) capture the intimacy so iconic of this music community. They bring together many gifted musicians from 577 Records’ impressive catalog, activities, and recordings, as well as special guests, new friends, and emerging artists from the label’s SOF residencies.

Both the magical assembly of this trio and their collaborative avant-garde goodness are characteristic of the New York Forward Festival’s innovative vibes.  Together, Carter, Putman, and Ughi present essential, abstract music as a full-body experience that one can only describe as the exhilarating chemistry of sound.  This live show embodies the mystical and sacred nature of their decades-long friendship that is steeped in a shared passion for creating melodies.

577 Records will release Stream of a Dream on June 14, 2024, both digitally and on CD.

577 Records’ The Sea, The Space, and Egypt, Vol. 1 is what happened when old friends and a new connection united in the name of music.  A heartfelt tribute to the great Sun Ra, the otherworldly album debuts the collaborative gifts of Michael Sarian (on the trumpet), Matthew Putman (on the keys), Federico Ughi (on the drums), and up-and-coming Cuban bassist Ledian Mola.
Sure, most of these musicians have played together in the past.  Sarian and Putman have made many albums together, while Putman and Ughi have conspired on melodies for fifteen years.  However, we guarantee you have never heard them all in one spot like this.
Alabama’s Sun Ra rose to the top of the Chicago music scene in the 1940s with something unprecedented.  A cosmic pioneer of Afrofuturism, he became known for his diverse and unique avant-garde experimentalism.  Modern artists champion him as a true innovator.
The new band revives the late Sun Ra’s magic in this appropriately named new release.  Matthew Putman even plays the same keyboard model as the experimental music icon (the Rocksichord). Even the cover art is a nod to Sun Ra's ancient Egyptian influences, featuring an upside-down pyramid over a galactic setting created by Robert Mirolo.
Meanwhile, Ledian Mola adds vocals inspired by Cuban folklore to these incredible improvisations.  The album marks Mola’s first time recording with the other artists in the group (and 577 Records), but you would never know it.  Their abstract rhythms sound like they’ve been playing together for a lifetime!  He was hand-chosen for this project from 577 Records’ 2022 SOF music residency in Italy and has performed at several of the New York Forward Festival's live events. 
From the label guided by Daniel Carter, The Sea, The Space, and Egypt will be presented in two parts.  Vol. 1 will be available January 17, 2025 on LP and CD (in limited numbers).  Vol. 2 will drop soon after!

From the soul of 577 Records comes an epic collaboration from experimental masters, pianist Matthew Putman, bassist Hill Greene, and drummer Francisco Mela (who also plays the whistle in this one).  It’s synergy like never before.  The sounds you’ll hear in Believe That Was Me could only have been achieved by this specific combination of artists, setting, and time.
Although Greene and Putman have been collaborating since 2017, this release marks the first time Mela and Putman have played together – though you’d never know it, thanks to their intense chemistry.  This extraordinary album doesn’t only gracefully bridge the gap between intense melodies and classic avant-garde energy; it takes many trips over that bridge and back to unlock an existential experience.
The musicians were shook when they first heard the playback.  They almost didn’t recognize their own enviable talents!  And in that moment, the album title was born.  Believe That Was Me isn’t just an observation; it’s a reckoning.
These three men have roots buried in the heart of the 577 Records community.  They’ve all been a part of it for over a decade (since 2009 for Putman).  Their new album was recorded at the label’s studio in Brooklyn, home of the New York Forward Fest (NYFF).  There’s no doubt that Believe That Was Me was influenced by the enchanting location and lingering high vibes of this community of musicians and their supporters.  Even the cosmic sounds of NYFF’s iconic magical piano were injected into the recording through Putman’s fingers.

On September 5th, 200 first-edition LPs and 100 first-edition CDs will be available.  You can also enjoy it as a digital download from that date forward.

577 Records is proud to be celebrating its 24 year anniversary.  The legendary music master Daniel Carter was one of the first people 577 cofounder Federico Ughi met soon after arriving in New York from Italy in 2000, after a brief stint in London.  It was a meeting of like minds and shortly thereafter the two started a series of house concerts at 577 Fifth Avenue in Brooklyn, the apartment where Federico was living at the time. The spontaneous nature of the concerts along with the incredible caliber of the deep downtown underground music they were able to present inspired them to bring the unique nature of what they were doing to a wider audience and they founded the label 577 Records to further that mission. 

577 Records started the New York Forward Festival in 2015 to mark the momentous occasion of Daniel Carter’s 70th birthday, now with festival editions happening in Morocco and Italy as well, and the international residency program Sounds of Freedom, in which active musicians are awarded the opportunity to develop their own sound, skills, and improvisation concept.

100% of profit from the sale of most of these albums goes to the musicians.
