Long-term psychiatric treatment often includes medications that have far-reaching effects on the body’s immune, hormonal, and neurological systems. A number of antipsychotics and mood stabilizers—such as clozapine, olanzapine, or valproate—are known to lower white blood cell (WBC) counts, particularly neutrophils, which play a key role in fighting infection. This condition, known as leukopenia or agranulocytosis, increases the susceptibility to infections, including those that are sexually transmitted. Women with suppressed immune systems may be less able to fight off HPV, HIV, or herpes simplex, increasing the likelihood of long-term complications or transmission to offspring. Listen to More..
