This week we begin The Restoration Series with Garret Barbush, sharing stories of lives changed. For 12 years Garret was the CEO of Men of Iron, leading the organization and building a strong foundation for where Men of Iron is today. Garret grew up in the church and accepted Christ at an early age. At the age of 9, at a Royal Rangers camp, Garret felt the presence of the Holy Spirit for the first time. Responding to an altar call, he heard God say to him, "I'm going to use you in a big way." Despite decades of turmoil and counseling working through the trauma of sexual abuse and molestation at an early age, Garret looks back at this moment at Royal Rangers as instrumental in his faith journey.

As a younger sibling, Garret always struggled with feeling like he had to "measure up" to what his siblings had done.

"That became my mentality with my faith, I have to earn God's respect, I have to earn God's love. I had this warped reality of who God was, that God wasn't my Father, I just had to impress Him."

In college is when Garret started to take on his faith as his own. Garret credits a college professor, Doctor Shane Johnson as the first man in his life who showed him what it meant to be a man. "He was harsh, he was firm but it was always the truth." This was a major turning point in Garret's life, that woke him up to the fact that he wasn't living the right way.

Mentorship isn't that hard, it's just making yourself available to others, Doc Johnson made himself available to Garret. In 2011, on his honeymoon, Garret felt an overwhelming sense from God that something was going to change. Later in 2011 the Founder of Men of Iron, Garret's brother-in-law Bryan, approached Garret to lead Men of Iron as the CEO. As soon as Garret made this move God anointed him with this passion for men getting it right, and leading their families well.

Mentorship changed Garret's life and he wants to provide that to as many men as possible. He believes that mentorship is so vital, because as men we screw it up on our own. "You can find someone that has more knowledge and experience, they've been there and done that." There is so much we can glean from mentorship, but we have to take a posture of humility and say I don't have it figured out but I'm willing to do what it takes. Mentors see something in us that we don't see them in ourselves.

This week we continue The Restoration Series with Men of Iron alum Lou Zoeller. Lou grew up Catholic, in a great family with great parents. He got away from his faith during his young adult years, until he met his wife Melissa.

"I thought I had faith through my upbringing but realized I didn't have a relationship with Jesus."

Melissa challenged Lou in his faith and had the hard conversations he needed to hear. After one of those hard phone calls, Lou hung up mad, but God spoke to him in that moment. They ended up getting married and got plugged into a local church. Lou credits the people and men he met at Victory Church for changing his life. A good friend of Lou's suggested he go through Men of Iron, that it would be great opportunity to grow in his faith.

"I've been involved with Men of Iron for 12 years, as a mentor and a protege, it's done so much for me that I can't say thank you enough."

Lou wants men to know that it doesn't matter what your struggle is, there is a mentor for you, you need someone to walk through this with you. Men,  you will not sit across the table from a perfect person, we are all going through something. A mentor isn't going to tell you what you want to hear, but what you need to hear. Knowing that there are other men out there that can walk the journey with you, it's an amazing thing.

"It's not just the changes I see that I care about, it's what my wife, my kids and friends see and hearing them say there is something different about him."

Men of Iron took this broken guy and put me back together and made me stronger. When you get knocked down and you struggle it's okay to admit your struggles and get back up again.

This week we continue The Restoration Series with Vinnie DePaul. Vinnie grew up in a Christian home but it was a home that felt very legalistic. To Vinnie the Bible felt like "a big book of no." Vinnie saw Christians as hypocrites, there was no love, it was all about rules. At 16 Vinnie wanted to go his own way so he moved to New York City to do comedy, and that's where he met his wife Monica. A couple years later Monica ended up getting cast as Sarah in Abraham as Sarah at Sight and Sound Theatres in Lancaster, PA. Vinnie's hometown. Vinnie was furious, worried that her knew role at Sight and Sound would draw her back towards Christianity. It was during this season at Sight and Sound that Monica rededicated her life to the Lord.

On his way to visit Monica in Lancaster, Vinnie was involved in a near-death motorcycle accident. An EMT on the scene told Vinnie, "You need to thank the good Lord you are alive, because He saved your life today." It was after this accident that things started to shift for Vinnie.

"In my room by myself, I made my peace with God. I said I believe you are who you say you are. I have some issues, especially when it comes to Christian men, but I am reluctantly yours."


Vinnie's journey of spiritual growth began when he moved back to Lancaster, PA. "Something changed in that space, and so much had to do with the men that surrounded me. These men represented Jesus and Christianity in a way that was the polar opposite of what he experienced growing up in church. Vinnie would go on to become the children's pastor at Victory Church and eventually was introduced to Men of Iron. 

Mentorship is iron sharpening iron, it's the clanging of steel, it's not easy. That character is what we are after, but we don't always want to do the hard work to get it. I think pride keeps men from asking for help from other men. Mentorship is all about being a better husband, father and disciple.

This week we continue The Restoration Series with Pete Rodriguez. Pete grew up in Brooklyn with a single mom, because of a dad who was never present. Pete was a pastor's kid, but his dad was always out doing ministry and never at home. 

"That's what ministry was for me, my dad was off doing something great, but here we are on food stamps in section eight."
Despite his dad being gone, Pete had a lot of amazing men that served as father figures in his life for certain seasons. Because of his relationship with his father Pete still struggles with male relationships. "As I've matured I have realized the benefit of being surrounded by other guys in any capacity." Pete credits the mentors, the father figures, in his life that have walked with him through tough seasons. Acknowledging his dad's flaws is not a criticism; it's allowed Pete to grow as a husband and father. The best thing we can do as men is to allow time and space for vulnerability. Vulnerability does not came naturally for men, but it's vital for growth.

This week we finish The Restoration Series with a very special guest, Pastor Joby Martin! Joby Martin is the founder and lead pastor of The Church of Eleven22 (https://coe22.com) in Jacksonville, Florida. In addition to providing The Church of Eleven22 with vision and leadership, Pastor Joby is a national and international preacher and teacher. Joby grew up in South Carolina and spent much of his Sunday mornings hunting and fishing, and not at Sunday service. Joby knew of God but knew nothing of Jesus being the propitiation of his sins. He was at youth camp as a teenager and the counselors reenacted the crucifixion of Jesus, they gave a gospel presentation and a salvation invitation.

Joby would later go back to that same camp in college, and started preaching. It was at camp that one of the speakers said, "Some of you need to go into full-time vocational ministry," and Joby felt like God was talking to directly to him.

So I went and talked to my pastor and he said, "God will always confirm what he calls," and he invited me to be an intern.

Joby went on to launch his church in 2012. At The Church of Eleven22, they are calling all men to stand up and act like men. "There is a real attack on manhood in today's culture." It's a high holy calling to be created in the image of God as a man. To be a provider, protector, and servant king.

The problem is that men have abdicated their responsibility to be advancers of the Kingdom of God

"Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong." 1 Corinthians 16:13 (NIV). The most dangerous thing a man can do say, "I got this." You cannot act like a man until you bend your knee down to Jesus and have him help you do what you can't do. To be a man is to imitate Jesus. It's pride that leads men to say they got this on their own.

We all need men in our lives, Mark 2 mat carriers, friends who will carry you to Jesus when you can't walk. Write down those four men right now, if you can't write those four men down you aren't doing it right. The enemy is trying to steal kill destroy, we need a band of brothers to distinguish the flames of the enemy. Do you have friends that have enough faith that when you are in a tight spot you can borrow some of their faith?
