CBIA BizCast: Mentoring Next-Generation Talent

How do you interest students in a career they may not know anything about?

That’s a question the team at Mercer Investments is working to answer. 
Mercer principal Siddhartha Kalita joined the CBIA BizCast to highlight the company’s mentorship program, designed to inspire high students from disadvantaged backgrounds to explore financial services careers. 
Kalita said the initiative was created to bring the concept of financial awareness and career opportunities to young people while they’re still in school. 
“I had a good foundation at home,” Kalita said. 
“My parents pushed me to a math program, and that helped me to get that first, first head start into this world of financial industries. Not everyone has that background.”
To put the initiative into action, Mercer connected with several schools including Wilbur Cross High School in New Haven.
They then built a three-phase program:
Phase 1: Employees visit the school to tell students about careers in financial services.
Phase 2: Interested students visit Mercer’s Norwalk office to see firsthand what a financial services career entails.
Phase 3: Mercer mentors work one-on-one with a small group of students on a research project that gives them about 50 hours of hands-on experience.
About five students end up completing the program each year, which is now in its third year. 
Kalita said he'll know the program is a success when one of the students joins the workforce.
“We try to bring them to the reality of what they have in the future when they get out of college, if they go to college, and then how could they be really happy in life,” Kalita said. 
Kalita said the program is part of Mercer’s long-term efforts to build a diverse and inclusive workforce. 
“Inclusion is in the genes of our organization,” he said.
“This is one way for our company and for us to contribute back to the society, to actually create a diverse pool that one day will become the employment pool.”

Rocking the decks at a young age, DJ TOMMY "T" has captivated dance floors across the globe with his unique style of mixing.
Born in Queens, and growing up on the outskirts of New York City, Tommy listened to an array of different musical genres from “Rock” to “New Wave” to “Hip-Hop” to “Freestyle” and to the underground sounds of “Club Music”.
It was at the age of thirteen when Tommy was first introduced to the “Club Scene”, his older friends who were already clubbin’ had turned him on to the one sound that perhaps paved the way for him in ways he’d yet to realize. 
The DJ bug hadn't bitten into Tommy just yet, for a while he'd had his hand in other aspects of the music industry, working in Promotions and as Road Management/Artist Development with Def Jam, Warner Brothers, & Sony, as well as the likes of various artists such as, Bad Boy Bill, C&C Music Factory (Ft. Freedom Williams),Nadine Renée (Of: Planet Soul) & Billie Ray Martin to name a few.
It wasn’t until after several years of clubbing and going to house parties with fellow DJ Friends, that Tommy started to realize his calling and figured he could do it better than some of the stuff he was listening to.
From then on Tommy has been addicted.
"It was all a fluke, I used to enjoy the music and never had aspirations of dee-jaying until I wanted to hear music a certain way and I said I could do it better than the next guy".
DJ's such as David Morales, "BABY" Hec Romero, Todd Terry, Roger Sanchez, & Little Louie Vega were all influences in the Tommy "T" sound you hear today.  As time progressed Tommy became infatuated with the Chicago House scene. This was the extra added ingredient to his special style. 
"Going to Chicago is like being in school, the talent out there is first class and the experience and knowledge you gain from everyone is golden"
Being a big fan of classics such as the Sal Soul Era, Tommy has been able to incorporate that musical knowledge into his sets. 
Always looking for the next level to climb Tommy joined long time friend Roger Sanchez on tour to over see things and help out. This was the golden opportunity for Tommy, as he likes to call it:
"S.O.S." School Of Sanchez.
Tommy enhanced his mixing skills and programming by learning from the best.
"This was an opportunity that I was blessed with, I learned alot".
The Tommy "T" sound is very across the board, it’s Chunky, sexy, tribal, & deep with an edge of Techno. Tommy keeps it across the board so that you want more.
Tommy "T" has continued sharing his DJ skills to crowds from all over the world from various segments on AREA 33 SIRIUS RADIO to GROOVE RADIO to various other stations as well as DJ’ing in such great places as Colombia, South America, Canada and the U.S.A.
Tommy is not just limited to spinning house, he’s also has held down various hip hop residencies in NYC, among other dance music type genres as well. 
Tommy "T" feels that it is important to educate the crowd and take the party to the next level.
"I always vibe off the way the crowd reacts and then kick it up 100% giving them that extra edge of excitement.

Danny Rhys is a UK underground House & Tech House artist and works within the A&R team at the renowned Toolroom Records. Releasing on some of dance music’s notorious labels such as the mighty Toolroom, HouseU, Flashmob LTD, Alex Preston’s Basement Sound and DJ S.K.T’s Stashed Music to name a few. Danny’s monthly podcast ‘Straight From The Record Box’ showcasing the best in dance music is listed in the Top 10 Best UK Left Wing Podcasts of 2021 which is a huge honor to be recognised as a tastemaker in the scene. 

Notorious for his energetic performances using the full potential of what the decks can offer, Danny involves every floor groover with the emotion of fusing all sub-genres of House music! Having taken stage across Europe's most notable clubs and venues Danny has performed at the infamous Amnesia Ibiza, Kalypso (Elrow) Croatia, We Are Festival, Ministry of Sound, Egg LDN and that’s only to name a few. Having opened for Mark Knight, Tough Love, Leftwing : Kody, Seth Troxler, Danny has since joined the #ToolroomFamily performing at their London residencies at Ministry Of Sound & Studio 338 in which the label is predicting big things for Danny Rhys.

Shawn Austin has been behind the decks since 1995 and by 2002 he had played many of Toronto's top clubs including The Docks, Atlantis, Guvernment, Paparazzi, Meow, Colossus and a nine-month residency at Venus.  

In 2001 Shawn's remix of Gigi D'Agostino's international hit "I'll Fly With You" helped the record to hit the Canadian National Dance Chart, eventually peaking at number 35.  In 2006, Shawn began working on new music with Toronto-based producer Adam K.  The result was the progressive-electro slammer, "40,000 Years of Funk".  Peaking at 4 on Beatport.com's Progressive  House Chart and 7 on the Beatport.com top 100, it is a crowd pleasing peak-time favourite that got spins from Tiesto, Tom Novy, Flash Brothers and many others in support of remixes from Hirshee and Hatiras.  

Shawn has had guest mixes featured on Platinum Radio London, BrokeFM.uk.co, thediscographylessons.com, and recorded the DJ mix of tracks from Jukebox Rekordz's "Waves III:  A Tribute To Crydamoure" compilation.  Shawn’s DJ sets embrace disco and funky house, current club anthems and classic favourites together with rare gems and remixes.

Shawn currently hosts the monthly "Toxic Radio" program airing on the 1st Sunday of each month on the UK's NDC Radio.  Austin is a resident DJ at Only For Promo with his mixes airing every month on www.clubsoundz.fr, www.sunyfunradio.fr and https://www.mixcloud.com/OnlyForPromo/. Greg Cerrone is a French-American DJ and producer born in Los Angeles and grew up between LA and Paris.
Greg has worked for Malligator Records for many years as producer & A&R, to later create his own record label, “On Air Music” in 2005, then on his latest US label LifeCode Records in 2023.
Greg Cerrone also got signed to Ultra Music and released tracks on Size, Armada & Atlantic. He got remixed by Avicii and did remixes for Britney Spears, Will I Am and One Republic, as well as collaborated with Arno Cost. 
Greg has worked in production with big names such as Cerrone his father, Nile Rodgers, Bob Sinclar, Don Ray, Stargate, Kungs & so many more.
Greg as a DJ built his name and recognition internationally where he played: Ministry of Sound UK, Space Ibiza, Opium/Pacha Barcelona, M1nt Hong Kong, Canada, St Barth, Russia, Brazil, Belgium, Ukraine, Tunisia, Morocco, Italy, NYC, LA, Miami, Vegas, Mexico City, Tulum and Cabo. He has also been very demanded for private events all around the world. Today he has residencies at Members LA, Sunset at Edition LA, Gospel NYC, Phonique Mexico City, Raspoutine LA/Paris & plays very often at Mila Lounge Miami, Sound LA, La Mesa LA…
In 2020, he released ‘Back to Life’ EP blending Afro-house and melodic-tech-house. Then ‘Falling Into Your Love’ with Paul Harris featuring Charlotte Haining and the acclaimed “Goodwill” an instrumental musical journey. 
In 2023, Greg Cerrone launched his new US label LifeCode Records & released on it ‘This is your day’ with long time writer & singer collaborator Claudia Kennaugh, followed by ‘Alright’ with Polina, including remixes by Nico de Andrea and Essence of Time. Greg also remixed officially the most famous french disco song “Alexandrie, Alexandra” by legendary Claude François that same year.
2024 will be a year full of releases with the 1st one, his official remix of Bob Sinclar & Axwell featuring Ron Carroll “What A Wonderful World” released in January.
Greg also released his cover of the classic “In The Air Tonight” by Phil Collins on his own label LifeCode Records supported by many big Djs.
Then, Greg released a very emotional song “Forever” on his own label again. This composition is dedicated to a lost loved one.
2025 Greg releases on his label a fresh House-Disco track "Glow Up" alongside rising star Sophie Shaw. Co-written & co-produced with top producer duo Stargate.
