"L’histoire de l’ethnologie a largement insisté sur les pratiques de collecte et de mise en musée d’objets, considérés comme des documents ethnographiques ou comme des oeuvres d’art. La mission Dakar-Djibouti, qui traversa le continent africain entre 1931 et 1933, est considérée comme fondatrice de l’ethnologie professionnelle en France. Elle a rapporté près de 3500 objets, actuellement conservés au musée du Quai Branly-Jacques Chirac, et a défini des méthodes de collecte et d’enquête qui ont marqué la discipline. Mais comment comprendre que les membres de cette mission ethnographique aient aussi ramené en France environ deux cents oiseaux naturalisés, dont nombre d’entre eux gisent aujourd’hui dans les réserves du Muséum national d’histoire naturelle de Paris ?

Ce livre propose d’interroger la rencontre entre ethnologie et ornithologie à l’origine même du développement de l’ethnologie française. Partir des oiseaux pour écrire cette histoire oblige à changer de perspective, à pointer les affinités entre des pratiques d’observation et de collecte, à interroger la transformation d’oiseaux en spécimens ou la présence de plumes, de becs, de morceaux d’ailes dans les objets acquis (ou parfois volés) par la mission. Mais cette histoire de l’ethnologie à partir des oiseaux est aussi une invitation à revisiter celle des sciences en situation coloniale, à mettre en évidence les liens entre ethnologie et surréalisme ou les interférences entre la chasse et la collecte d’artefacts, voire entre la taxidermie et le désir masculin."

Julien Bondaz est chercheur au laboratoire d’excellence Création, arts et patrimoines (Labex CAP). Il est actuellement affilié à l’université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne et à l’Institut interdisciplinaire d’anthropologie du contemporain (EHESS-CNRS). Il a étudié l’histoire de l’art, la littérature et l’anthropologie sociale et culturelle. Depuis 2004, il conduit des travaux de terrain en Afrique de l’Ouest sur l’art, l’image et l’héritage.
