Jake DeNicola is a NYC based Director of Photography and Producer. Along with his interest in visual anthropology, comes his deeply passionate and active engagement in filmmaking. Born and raised in Greenwich Village, Jake’s work spans from documentary film, music video, short narrative, commercial, fashion and shooting livestream music concerts for Pitchfork Tv, bridging his two passions of music and film together. His own work has appeared in film festivals like, The Catskill Mountain Film Festival, The Glendale International Film Festival, Greenwich Village Film Festival and The Coney Island Film Festival. Jake has also Dp’d for directors, Chris Dapkins, and Academy Award nominated documentarian, Christine Choy. Jake is currently in post-production for his short film, 8 Deer, in which he documents a college student returning to his indigenous community in Oaxaca, Mexico for the first time in 8 years.  Jake is also a musician, with his primary instrument as drums.  We are playing tracks today on the show that feature him as a drummer, from his band Fovea, and also a track from Peter Lewis’ record Road to Zion, and Arwen Lewis’ debut album Arwen, all produced by John DeNicola and released on Omad Records.

SN2 | EP4 -  Jake DeNicola on The Arwen Lewis Show

Singer/Songwriter/Producer Carla Olson is soon to release the third in her series of "duet" albums “Have Harmony, Will Travel 3” via BFD Records/The Orchard on October 20, 2023.

HHWT3 follows “Night Comes Falling,” Carla’s 2022 collaboration with Stephen McCarthy of The Long Ryders and like the two previous volumes of “Have Harmony, Will Travel,” features an impressive guest list of some of Carla’s talented friends.

The new album includes appearances by Texas guitar heroes Eric Johnson, Jake Andrews and Gary Myrick along with guitarists Craig Ross (Broken Homes, Lenny Kravitz,) Todd Wolfe (Sheryl Crow,) Laurence Juber (Paul McCartney and Wings) and legendary harmonica player Mickey Raphael (Willie Nelson.)

Guest vocalists include B.J. Thomas, Allan Clarke (The Hollies,) Harvey Shield (The Mighty Echoes,) Robert Rex Waller Jr. and Shawn Barton Vach. Closing the album are three (previously unreleased) live tracks recorded with Gene Clark (The Byrds.)

Songs on the album include classics written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Pete Townshend, Gene Clark and others, along with two new songs written by Carla Olson and Allan Clarke.

The first single from the album, Carla's version of Texas legends The Zakary Thaks' garage rock classic “Face To Face” featuring fellow Texan, guitar virtuoso Eric Johnson is now available at streaming services (link below.)

Carla has had an extensive career in the music business, she’s cut records with Gene Clark, Mick Taylor, and is a member of an amazing band called The Textones

SN2 | Ep5 - Carla Olson on The Arwen Lewis Show

After years of playing a circuit of R&B clubs and events and speakeasies in the Pacific Northwest, Don Stevenson trekked down to the Bay Area in the summer of ’65. He’d recently joined The Frantics. The following summer he co-founded the iconic San Francisco band, Moby Grape. Playing ballrooms, like The Fillmore and Avalon, the Grape instantly became the darlings of the Bay Area, and the object of a massive bidding war. In the early weeks of ’67 the fivesome shuffled between San Francisco and Los Angeles with record company executives from Columbia, Atlantic, and Elektra elbowing each other out of the way, with contracts and pens in hand. Signing with Columbia, Moby Grape recorded their debut in a handful of sessions in the spring of ’67. The album came out a few days after Pepper and a couple of weeks later, the Grape played a killer set at the Monterey Pop Festival.  
As a songwriting-singing drummer, Don Stevenson was a trailblazer, opening the door for the likes of Levon Helm and Don Henley. Moby Grape’s self-titled LP isn’t just one of the best debuts in history, it’s one of the best albums ever cut. It’s now over half a century after those heady days and today Stevenson is putting out his third solo album, Limited Engagement—Volume 1. Produced by Jamie Collins- SoundSuiteMusic, and featuring such talent as Tim Bovaconti (Burton Cummings Band), Dane Clark (John Mellencamp Band), and Dale Ockerman (Doobie Brothers), the album includes 11 stellar tracks tapping into all the genres Moby Grape explored so many years ago.  
With another dozen tracks in the can, Stevenson’s next album is right around the corner and he’s looking into the past, present, and future all at once. At 82, Don Stevenson has every bit as much energy as those two generations younger and you’ll witness this when his band hits the stage at Massey Hall. Having shared the bill with the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Steve Miller, The Byrds, BB King, Buddy Guy, Sly Stone, and a host of others, Don Stevenson is no stranger to event concerts, like Chest Fever. Prepare to be bowled over by a seasoned icon.

SN2 | EP 17 Peter Lewis, John DeNicola, Jake DeNicola and Jeremiah Higgins on The Arwen Lewis Show

THE MAYBIRDS is a Los Angeles-based rock band, formed in 2022 by George Adrian, Alex Locascio and Audrey Wiechman. The three crossed paths over the years on various projects, but when they got together for a jam one night they knew they’d found a special synchronicity, and The Maybirds was born.

The Maybirds’ sound is a modern take on ‘60s pop meets ‘70s rock and a splash of punk, with driving beats, catchy riffs and lush harmonies.

• George Adrian - guitars and vocals
Chicago native George Adrian has been a staple on the L.A. music scene for many years. After finding success alongside Tyler Bates (Marilyn Manson) in film scoring and composing (Psycho Cop 2, and Blue Flame directed by Cassian Elwes), his passion for performing led him to a longtime residency at the world-famous Cat Club. George recently accompanied Jerry Cantrell (Alice In Chains) on bass for Cantrell’s ”Brighten” U.S. and European Tour 2022-2023. George is currently collaborating on a new album with legendary artist Peter Lewis (Moby Grape).

• Alex Locascio - drums and percussion
Alex Locascio is also a Chicago native. Alex’s love of music began at age seven when he started playing the drums. He is a seasoned musician who has worked with a wide variety of artists including Tears for Fears, Phoenix and Tori Amos with LA-based band “Pet”.

• Audrey Wiechman - bass and vocals
Los Angeles native Audrey Wiechman sang on TV commercials
as a child and has been making music ever since. Her recorded vocal credits range from a Disney record (“The Lion Sleeps Tonight” on Rhythm of the Pride Lands) to a Rob Zombie record (Educated Horses). Audrey has played bass in many bands over recent decades, including Loaded with Muddy Dutton (Chris Robinson Brotherhood). She played bass on Tommy Lee’s Methods of Mayhem record, and has an on-screen bass performance in the movie Boogie Nights.

SN 3 | EP 11 Bob Mosley (Moby Grape) on The Arwen Lewis Show

Had it not been for the melodic and accomplished guitar work of Peter Albin flowing out of an upper story window at 1090 Page Street in the early summer of 1965, there might never have been a Big Brother and the Holding Company. It was on that day that Sam Andrew happened down Page Street in San Francisco and was so impressed by what he heard, that he went in and introduced himself.
Peter was born on June 6, 1944 in San Francisco. He began playing guitar at an early age and became involved in the folk scene of the early 60s. While attending The College of San Mateo, Peter and his brother Rodney played in a bluegrass band called the Liberty Hill Aristocrats.
By the time Peter met Sam in 1965, he had aspirations of forming a band that would write and perform children’s songs. One of the first songs he wrote while working with children at The Marin Jewish Community Day Camp, north of San Francisco, was “Caterpillar”. This song went on the appear on the first Big Brother and the Holding Company Album.


But the guitarist who inspired the first meeting with Sam Andrew ended up making the transition to bass and has spent the majority of his career with that instrument. Although his fine guitar work can be heard on cuts such as “Coo-Coo”, “Oh, Sweet Mary”, and “Turtle Blues” and also on Big Brother LPs “Be A Brother” and “How Hard It Is”.
Witty and personable, Peter provided much of the on-stage commentary and also served as the liaison for the group with managers and promoters. Also, in the early days of Big Brother, before Janis, Peter did most of the lead vocals for the band. Among the many songs he sang were “Blow My Mind” and “Down On Me”. Even after Janis, the first album finds Peter’s lead on “Blindman”, “Light Is Faster Than Sound”, and “Caterpillar”.
Peter’s musical pursuits have also extended beyond Big Brother and the Holding Company. He has played with Country Joe and the Fish and can be heard on their 1969 Vanguard album “Here We Are Again”. He later toured in an all-star band with Joe McDonald that cut an album outside Paris (Paris Sessions, Vanguard – 1973) in September of 1972.
In 1982, Peter was one of the founding members of the Bay Area super group, The Dinosaurs. Along with Peter, the group consisted of, John Cipollina, Barry Melton, Merl Saunders, Robert Hunter, and Spencer Dryden.
Peter has loaned many items to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum in Cleveland. The most notable piece is his legendary psychedelic Fender Jazz Bass from 1968 which is now a popular museum attraction.

Today, Peter is still playing occasionally with Big Brother and the Holding Company, the Barry Melton Band, and the Irish Newsboys.
