Energy transition is crucial to the struggle against climate change. Imre Szman is concerned with who is trying to lay claim to the narratives guiding our transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy, how they are doing it, and why and to what ends. Mark Simpson joins Szeman in conversation about Szeman’s new book, Futures of the Sun: The Struggle over Renewable Life. 



Imre Szeman is director of the Institute for Environment, Conservation, and Sustainability and professor of human geography at the University of Toronto Scarborough. He is cofounder of the Petrocultures Research group.

Mark Simpson is professor of English and film studies at the University of Alberta, one of the founding collaborators on the research collective After Oil, and a core member of the Petrocultures Research Group.

Time Flies provides a unique perspective on Prince Edward Island’s transformation over 85 years (1935–2020) through aerial photography and historical analysis. The book showcases iconic landscapes, highlighting changes in land use and ecosystems. It is divided into four chapters focusing on resource economies, rural communities, urban development, and coastal change. The work offers valuable insights into the social and ecological evolution of the island, offering broader lessons on modern change.

Dr. Joshua MacFadyen is the Canada Research Chair in Geospatial Humanities and an associate professor in the Applied Communication, Leadership, and Culture program at the University of Prince Edward Island. I like experimenting with sounds. Most of my songs are going to be #melancholic and influenced by #rnb, #rock, #pop, #edm, #blues, #electronic and #trap. I often blend genres into #fusion. I like to incorporate #romantic, #dark, #literary, #historical, and #cosmic themes into my songs. But I plan to experiment with more themes and genres in the future.
